Fertilize Fishponds
J.T. Coots, local represen
tative of the Soil Conserva
tion Service, says it is time
to begin fertilizing fish
ponds.
“Proper fertilization in
creases fishpond yields just
the same as it increases
yields of crops,” Coots said.
“An unfertilized pond will
yield 50 to 150 pounds of fish
per acre each year; with
proper fertilization this can
go up to 400 pounds per
acre.”
According to Coots, each
pond is different and re
quires different amounts of
fertilizer. Most ponds in our
area require lime in addition
to fertilizer. Lime should be
applied in the fall or early
winter.
Louis Justice, SCS biolog
ist in Athens, outlines some
simple recommendations for
fertilizing Georgia ponds.
First, determine if the pond
is suitable for fertilization. A
pond that has any of the
following five conditions
should not be fertilized:
1) If the pond is muddy
during spring and summer
months,
2) Contains an unbalanced
population or undesirable
species of fish,
3) is infested with weeds,
4) is not fished heavily, or
5) has excessive water
running through the pond
during late spring and early
summer months, applica
tions of fertilizer will not be
effective.
If the pond is suitable, then
start fertilizing in early
spring when the water tern-

Sets Visit
In Arts
Forsyth County high
school seniors interested in
art or music will have a
chance to find out more
about what college has to
offer when Reinhardt Col
lege in Waleska hosts it’s
first “Fine Arts Overnight
Campus Visit,” Feb. 24-25.
Prospective students will
have a chance to come to the
campus and meet the fine
arts faculty and students al
ready in Reinhardt’s pro
grams. They will also have a
chance to see the college’s
art and music facilities,
learn about degrees offered
and how to apply for fine arts
scholarships.
The program is designed
especially for high school
seniors and high school mu
sic teachers. The program is
free and housing and meals
are furnished by Reinhardt
College.

Burglary
Charges
Face Five
One 17-year-old and four
juveniles have been arrested
in connection with four bur
glaries which occurred in
north Forsyth County.
Sheriff Wesley Walraven
said the youths were ar
rested by sheriff’s deputies
after a resident caught one
of the suspects allegedly
stealing gas from his vehi
cle.
Further investigation re
vealed the five suspects may
have been involved in addi
tional burglaries and thefts.
Walraven identified the 17-
year-old as Ricky Michael
Bennett, of Cumming. The
four juveniles, ages 16, 15
and 14, also are Forsyth
County residents.
The juveniles names can
not be released under
Georgia law. Bennett has
been released under $30,000
bond and the juveniles have
been turned over to juvenile
authorities.

used with good success.
Three applications of

water. Since fertilizer works
best in warm water, Justice
advises that applications be
stopped when the water tem
perature drops below 65 de
grees, or about Nov. 1.
“It is impossible to grow a
good crop of com in Georgia
without fertilizer, and the
same principles apply to
growing a crop of fish,” adds
Coots. “The key to producing
more fish in a good pond is to
fertilize the water early, reg

There is no shortcut.”
