MALOCCLUSIONS
Q. What do dentists mean when they talk about correcting
malocclusion?
A. Malocclusion is the term used when teeth do not fit
together properly in the mouth. They've grown in crooked,
out of line, overcrowded or too far apart. Any of these con
ditions can be caused by heredity, too-early foss of primary
teeth, injury, or illness.
Certain personal habits, such as thumbsucking, lip-biting,
tongue thrusting, and improper swallowing, also play a role
in malocclusion. Breathing through the mouth, often caused
by blocked nasal passages, can also cause it. Correcting
malocclusion is advisable; the family dentist sometimes cor
rects this condition. More often he refers patients to on or
thodontist (tooth-straightening specialist). Depending upon
the problem, orthodontics can be done at any age.
