Efficiency In The Home

Suggestions on how to op
erate a more efficient house
hold are always welcome by
most of us.
This article lists things I
hope you will be able to ap
ply for the sake of efficiency
and economics.
Just as gasoline for your
automobile is measured in
gallons, food energy for your
body is measured in cal
ories. A calorie is no more a
villain than gasoline; they
both produce energy but
the secret is knowing how
full to fill the tank.

Warm milk is often relied
on to help us sleep better.
Why? The key lies in the
composition of milk. A glass
of milk contains about one
gram of substance known as
L-tryptophan, which the
body converts to serotonin, a
natural sedative. This reac
tion causes the warm milk
drinker to feel sleepy.
+ + +
Soft cookies keep best
when stored in containers
with a quartered apple.
Change the apple every
other day to keep the cookies
moist. Crisp cookies should
be stored in a cookie tin with
a tightly fitting cover. Keep
both types in a cool, dry
place.
4- + +
Salads, such as orange and
grapefruit sections, with red
apple wedges and halved To
kay grapes, are delicious
with a dressing made by
combining two tablespoons
each of toasted sesame seeds
and honey, one teaspoon
each of grated orange and
lemon peel, 1/8 teaspoon salt
and one cup of plain yogurt.
Cover and chill before using.

A meal should be like a
tightrope walker, evenly bal
anced, or it could fall down
nutritionally. Select from the
four basic food groups for
each meal so you don’t need
to worry. Each day we
should eat four servings
from the vegetable-fruit
group, four servings from
the bread and cereal group,
two to four servings from the
milk and cheese group and
two servings from the meat,
poultry, fish and bean group.

Looking for a quick, hot,
nutritious supper? Try tuna
cheese burgers: Flake tuna
with a fork, mix with
chopped celery, green pep
per and enough salad dress
ing to moisten. For each
seven-ounce can of tuna
used, add Vfe cup of cubed
cheddar cheese. Spoon into
sandwich buns and wrap in
aluminum foil. Heat in a 350
degree oven for 15 to 20 min
utes and serve hot with mugs
of milk.

Jaycettes’
Roadblock
Aids Camp
The Forsyth County Jay
cettes, along with more than
100 other Jaycette chapters
across the state, will hold a
roadblock for the Easter
Seal Camp Dream for hand
icapped children.
The roadblock is sched
uled for Saturday, Feb. 19,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
intersection of Georgia 9 and
Highway 20.
The Georgia Jaycettes
have spearheaded the drive
to build an Easter Seal
Camp. The camp is to be
built on property owned by
the Warm Springs Institute.
In the 1981-82 Jaycette
year, 85 percent of the Jay
cette chapters across
Georgia held money-making
projects for Camp Dream.
Not only is this camp a
dream to thousands of
Georgia Jaycees and Jay
cettes, but, more impor
tantly, it is a much-needed
and essential “dream” to
hundreds of handicapped
children, a Jaycette spokes
man said.
The Forsyth County Jay
cettes are asking persons to
help make the dream a real
ity by giving generously
when approached Saturday
at the above location.
THERMOSTATS
The thermostat on your
heating and cooling system
determines your home en
ergy needs, say Georgia Ex
tension Service specialists.
If one thermostat is used for
temperature control, it
should be centrally located
on an interior wall in the
main living room. Don’t put
thermostats near heating
ducts, under strong lights or
next to a heat source.

Whipped butter cannot be
substituted for butter, as it is
called for in recipes for
cakes and cookies. That’s
because air has been incor
porated into butter and there
is actually less butter in the
product that’s whipped.

quart popped com and salt to

You may never have to
make an extra trip to the
store to buy milk again. UHT
(extra high temperature)
milk, through a special pas
teurization process and
package, needs no refrigera
tion until it is opened and
it will remain fresh for up to
three months on your pantry
shelf. Now you can keep a
supply on hand for drinking,
cooking and those unex
pected shortages! UHT milk
is available in whole, lowfat
and chocolate quarts and
half-pints, and in several
new flavors. \
