Controlling Insects
COUNTY EXTENSION
DIRECTOR
Now is the ideal time of die
year to get an early start on
controlling insects and dis
eases. There are many ad
vantages to applying
dormant sprays during the
winter months.
First, you will have a head
start on controlling overwin
tering insects and diseases
before they become active.
Second, since dormant
sprays are not applied dur
ing the growing season,
there is less risk of damage
to the foliage of plants.
Third, dormant sprays are
probably the most effective
against difficult insects such
as scale, eggs of certain cat
erpillars, mealybugs and
mites.
Fourth, the dormant oil
sprays are very easy to ap
ply.
The most favorable time to
spray is when temperatures
are between 40 and 70 de
grees. The most important
plants to spray are fruit
trees, camellias, pyracan
tha, dogwood, azaleas and
rhododendron. Oil sprays of
2 or 3 percent may be pur
chased already emulsified to
make application easy.
These oil sprays can be
found in garden and hard
ware shops.
Another excellent dormant
spray is lime-sulphur. Lime
sulphur is not an oil, but a

KNOCKED-OUT TEETH
Q. Is it true that a tooth that's been knocked out can be put
bock in?
A. Given fast action, it con be done. If the entire tooth is intoct
and gets a quick trip to the dentist, it can usually be put back in
its socket. Replaced promptly, it has a good chance of settling
back in place while the gums heal and re-embrace it. Sometimes
root canal therapy is also indicated.
When the knock-out happens, put the tooth in a gloss of water
or wrap in a clean, wet cloth, and take off for tne dentist im
mediately. The replacement should be done within 30 minutes
to 2 hours after knock-out. The sooner it's done the better the
chance of re-establishing the tooth. Since this is an emergency
situation, it rotes a call to the dentist at ony time, even over
weekends or at odd hours. If he/she can't be reached, the local
hospital emergency room may have someone on call.
