In preparation for the upcoming BPW Northern District meeting in Rome, the Cumming-Forsyth
County BPW decided to endorse Eartene Roden as a candidate for Northern District vice director and
Laura Adamson for the state nominating committee. Lynn Irwin and Ann Gibson were asked to serve
as voting delegates for the local club and Barbara Barnett and Earlene Roden will serve as alternates.
Laura Adamson is currently serving on the 1984 Northern District nominating committee. New
members, Joanne Flood-Frankland, regional manager with Steiner Company, Inc., and Eleanor
Wilkins, an RN, were welcomed into BPW by the membership. Pictured (left to right) are Joanne Flood-
Frankland, Eleanor Wilkins, Earlene Roden, Laura Adamson, Barbara Barnett and Linda Brooks.
Asthma can be treated, controlled
(EDITOR’S NOTE: This health
information column is provided as a
community service of Forsyth
County Hospital.)
What is asthma?
Asthma means that the air tubes of
the lungs are narrowed by tightened
muscles, mucous plugs and swollen
tissues, causing breathing difficul
ties. This difficulty usually happens
in episodes or attacks.
During an episode, the air flowing
through the narrowed tubes makes
the whistling or wheezing sound that
people think of as asthma. Sometimes
coughing and spitting up of mucous
are part of the episode. Sometimes an
asthmatic episode may be mostly dry
coughing with little or no wheezing.
Episodes may be mild or severe,
and they may develop suddenly or
slowly. Between episodes, there may
be no symptoms. But this silent
asthma is still severe enough to cause
certain changes in breathing ability.
Most often the episodes, although
uncomfortable and frightening, are
relatively mild. They may subside
within a few minutes with or without
treatment. Or they may go on for a
few hours.
Some asthma episodes are very
serious. The person may feel that he
is suffocating - able to take in air,
perhaps, but not able to breathe it
out. Or the victim may be attacked by
spasms of coughing. Fighting to expel

air only makes it more difficult to
breathe and panic makes things
worse. Perspiration occurs and the
lips and nailbeds may take on a bluish
cast as the severity increases. The
labored breathing can often be heard
some distance away.
Who gets asthma?
Most often the victims are children.
It accounts for about half of all chro
nic illness in children, affecting more
than 2 million children 17 years old
and younger. Boys have asthma more
than girls do. Adults too get asthma,
but it occurs equally in men and
women.
What does asthma mean?
Most people with asthma can have
their disease controlled by medica
tion. They can take part in activities
and recreation, perhaps taking treat
ment to prevent an episode just be
fore active exercise.
Despite its distressing episodes,
asthma is rarely fatal. But the most
serious type called status asthmati
cus when the usual medicines do
not work well and the patient’s lack of
oxygen may be critical - often re
quires quick life-saving action.
What causes episodes?
People with asthma have been said
to have "twitchy lungs." A special
sensitivity causes their lung tissues to
react far more than they should to
various stimuli. The stimulus may be
an allergen, a substance that causes
an allergic reaction such as animal
dander or hay. Or it may be a nonal
lergic factor such as cold air, a viral
infection, vigorous exercise, tobacco
smoke, and air pollutants. Or the
stimulus may be a combination of
factors. Sometimes a child may react
to an infection, especially a cold or
other viral infection, by developing
asthma.
Worry and fear of an episode may
contribute to bringing one on. Ex
treme excitement and emotion cause
rapid breathing and may lead to
wheezing. But it is not true, as used to
be thought, that asthma is an emo
tional and psychological disorder.
Asthma is a physical disease, not a
mental one.
What happens during an episode?
During an asthma attack, the de
fensive reaction in the lung tubes
usually includes a tightening of the
muscles in the tube walls (which
narrows the tubes), an increase in
mucous secretions ( which fills up the
tubes) and a swelling of the wall
tissues (which also narrows the
tubes). All this narrowing and filling
leaves little room for air.
Asthmatic reactions usually hap
pen in the bronchi, the large passages
that carry air from the windpipe into
the lungs. The reactions also occur in
the much smaller passages, the bron
chioles. Many children lose the ten
dency to experience asthma as they

grow older because the large passa
geways become less sensitive to stim
uli.
Reactions may still occur deep in
the small passages, particularly in
chronic asthma. But the blockage of
those tiny tubes may have no notice
able effect on the person’s breathing,
even though breathing tests would
show abnormalities. Thus, the child
and subsequently the adult may no
longer have trouble with asthma,
even though it is still there. Some
times, however, sensitivity increases
in later years and trouble recurs.
When does asthma occur?
Asthmatic sensitivity may be sea
sonal if the irritants that brought on
episodes, pollens and spores, for ex
ample, appear seasonally. Or it may
go on all year if the patient is sensi
tive to something like house dust,
fumes or animal dander.
How is asthma treated?
Medical scientists have found a
number of new drugs to prevent
asthma episodes and to handle one
when it occurs. The first step by a
physician is to assess the patient’s
asthma, mostly by means of tests
that measure how well the lungs are
functioning during an episode. The
patient’s medicine must be carefully
chosen and measured for each indi
vidual. In a severe case, extra oxygen
and hormones may be used for treat
ment.
