ness and occupational license taxes
and license tees upon persons, firms,
and corporations doing business In
.ftp. unincorporated area of the
dbunty; to provide exceptions; to
provide tqr related matters; to pro
vide for e referendum; to repeal
conflicting laws; and for other pur

ERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: ;
Section 1, (e) The governing au
thority of Forsyth County is autho
rized to levy, assess; and collect
business dnd occupational license
taka* end license fees from alj per
sons, firm*, and corporations doing
business in the unincorporated area
of Forsyth County, except those busi
nesses specifically exempted by this
Act.
(b) .The following businesses shall
be exempt from taxes and fees Im
posed, under this Act:
(1) Those businesses regulated by
the <*eorgle Public Service Commis
sion;
:m those electrical service busi
nesses organized under Chapter 3 of
Title 46 of the 0.C.G.A.; and
(3) Thosa.businesses upon Which
local license taxes or license fees are
imposed under general laws authoriz
ing such local license taxes and li
cense fee*, unless such general law
specifically authorizes local license
taxes and license fen other than
those to which It specifically relates.
(O' The governing authority of
FOrlyth COunty is authorized to clas
sify businesses and to assess different
taxes and fees . against different
classes of businesses being carried on
lit • the unincorporated area of the
couhty.
• (d) The governing authority of For
sfth County it authorized to enact
orginancbs for the enforcement of
this Act eftd to provide for the punish
ment o’ violations of such ordinances.

Forsyth County residents, who are employees of AT&T in Sandy
Springs, met recently to finalize the list of participating candidates
and receive their patriotic hats to be worn during a week long,
“Meet The Candidates” program to be held Oct. 8 through 12.

McClain, Forsyth County, Alpharetta address. The program is
designed to provide AT&T’s 2,500 employees at the 6701 Roswell
Road Headquarters an opportunity to meet the candidates for
national, stats and local offices.
County takes option
on land for facility
The Forsyth County Board of Com
missioners last Wednesday took out
options <hi two 2-acre tracts of land on
the Canton Highway in anticipation of
receiving a $400,000 grant for a new
health department facility.
For $1 each, the commissioners
took out options on seperate tracts
owned by Lanier Bannister and La
mar Orr.
ThS commissioners learned Mon
day that its request for $400,000 from
the state administered Community
Development Block Grant was ap
proved by the state Department of
Community Affairs. (See Page 1
story).
The board has until Dec. 15 to
exercise one of the options.
Joyce Carter is asking
Mae Barber for a debate
Public Service Commission candi
date Joyce Carter has challenged her
opponent Mac Barber to a debate.
“I hope Mr. Barber will accept this
challenge and will meet me to debate
the issues that affect the people of
i Georgia," Ms. Carter said. “The peo
ple of Georgia have a right to hear
from the candidates so they can make
a choice.”
The League of Women Voters has
extended an invitation to both candi
dates to participate in a televised
debate, scheduled for Nov. 4 in the
metro-Atlanta area.
VFW membership is
2 million and growing
For the first time in the 85 year
history of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, the organization now numbers
more than 2,000,000 members,
according to Post Commander W.C.
Jim Grimes.
The long sought after goal was
officially reached on July 31, 1964.
Grimes said, “Reaching this historic
milestone represents an increase of
more than 40,000 members from 1983
and is a real tribute to the members
in our nearly 10,000 posts worldwide."
There also was a surge of Vietnam
veterans joining the organization who

Patriotic pair
Bannister’s property, at $50,000 for
two acres, has a 150-foot frontage on
Highway 20. Orr’s property, located
across the highway, is priced at $32,-
000 for two acres and features a 300-
foot frontage.
The commissioners are not obli
gated to buy either property.
In other business at the brief meet
ing, called to approve the options, the
commissioners adopted a resolution
to abandon Old McFarland Road,
which was relocated in 1964.
The county will abandon mainte
nance and ownership of all of Old
McFarland Road, except a 600-foot
section on the south end to allow
access for the Dodd residence to Old
Alpharetta Road.
“These debates are important to
my campaign. I promise to bring
common sense to the commission,
and one way I can do that is to take
my campaign to the people, and show
Georgians the difference between
