-FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS-SUNOAY, OCTOBER 7. im
‘Perfect’ situation
is in classroom only
On Tuesday of this past week, I
was contacted by Dr. Perry Jones,
a recreation instructor at North
Georgia College, and asked to
■peak to his Recreaion
Management class.
1 accepted the opportunity to sell
our programs and philosophies as
I often do when asked to speak by
local clubs and civic groups. The I
realised that these young people
probably weren’t interested in
what’s happening in Forsyth
County, or in any other specific
program, for that matter.
They are going to class to learn
correct management and
operative procedures from people
who know what they are talking
about. This realization scared me
a little bit because they have been
working with the idea of perfect
situations just as I did when I went
to school.
When I was in education, I was
taught methods and ideas based
cm textbook fact but when I started
teaching, I took on a whole
different perspective a different
world, in a manner of speaking.
The problem comes to a head
when I stand up in front of those
young people and hit them with the
reality of it all. They will quickly
find out, first of all, they will be
working more hours than they
would in almost any other
profession; that their hopes of
becoming rich will remain just
that; that they will be expected to
be an authority on the ASA
ratebook as well as an expert
clogger.
They will need expertise
ranging from drawing up double
elimination tournaments to
driving a tractor (dozer, ditch
witch, backhoe, frontend loader,
maintenance truck) to keeping
excellent records and squeezing
the greatest amount of work
materials from the smallest bit of
capital.
They must be a good painter,
sweeper, restroom cleaner, trash
can maker and emptier. They
should be proficient in public
relations, while possessing the
ability to make everyone mad and
still hang onto their jobs.
The art of landscaping, working
with crossties, resurfacing tennis
courts, controlling drainage,
picking up paper, filling drink
boxes and working concession
stands are all necessary skills
required of a recreation director.
I am afraid 1 will end up making

the class think I am telling
untruths when I explain the
importance of knowing how to set
grade stakes, make a swell for
proper drainage, determine
elevation through a transit or read
the before-and-after elevations of
a blue print.
But finally I believe that when I
explain the rewards of meeting
and talking to many different
people and personalities, of setting
down on a rock on top of a hill and
imagining what a park will look
live when it is carved out of the
forest, watching families spending
valuable time together in leisure
activities, or seeing the fun the
Community Bible softball team
has playing together win or lose, I
think they will see the real value of
recreation.
Recreation is vital to the
community growth and well-being
and good enthusiastic recreation
people are imperative to a
successful program. Youths and
adults, families, clubs, senior
citizens, athletes and civic leaders
all need to spend their leisure time
in wise, budgeted periods of their
everyday existence and proper
professional guidance and
facilities are an important part of
providing for that recreation.
I hope that I can talk to that
class and leave them with more
enthusiasm than they had when
they enrolled in the course. That is
in reality what people in
recreation are responsible...
Everyone who has their
volleyball teams organized should
contact the recreation department
by calling 887-5701 and leaving
your name and number. If you
want to play but do not have a
team, we can help you too. Call us
this week.
Dawson County High School's
faculty has fielded a team and
challenges any Forsyth County
elementary, junior high or high
school facility to try them in
league play. They say they are
pretty good.
I played on their team last year,
and I thought they would be down
when I left. But they say they are
better than ever and 1 just can’t
understand that.

But another pair of Forsyth errors
opened the gates for a three-run
Parkview seventh, and the Lady Bull
dogs found themselves relegated to a
second-place sub-region finish with a
10-7 defeat.
“Parkview played real well, but we
helped them out with mistakes in the
field," said Forsyth Coach Johnny
Tallant, who made a switch to a five
player infield in the second inning of
the second game, a strategy which
limited the Lady Panthers to but two
runs during the middle five innings.
Forsyth, which ended the regular
season with an 11-5 overall record and
an 8-2 mark in sub-region play, will
now face host Brookwood in the first

Lumpkin did mount one last des
peration attempt to avoid the shutout
late in the game, crossing midfield
for only the second time on a run by
Abercrombie and reaching the 25 on a
personal foul penalty against the
Bulldogs.
But Mitchell and Ingram batted
James Rostallon’s halfback pass out
of the hands of Joey Allred at the
Forsyth goal line on the game’s next
to-last play and the final horn
sounded as Abercrombie’s last-ditch
pass flew over the head of a diving
rtsceiver.
The Forsyth locker room was un
derstandably elated after the victory,
the likes of which have been all too
rare in recent years.
Jackson cited the Bulldogs’ speed
advantage over Lumpkin as the larg
est single factor in his team’s lop
sided victory. “Up the middle they
were strong, but once we got outside
they just could't stay with us.
“Everything seemed to click for us
tonight. Every move we made
seemed to be the right one,” said
Jackson. “Every phase of our game
came through tonight the defense
kept giving us good field position; the
offense took advantage of those
breaks by taking the ball in for the
score; the specialty teams played
well, especially (kicker Sean) Tebor
(who connected on six-of-seven con
version kicks and booted three kick
offs into the end zone); and we got a
chance to see our backups and
younger players in action.”
But the coach tempered his enthu
siasm over his team’s performance
with a few words of caution. “This
game can be a great confidence
builder for us heading into the Mur
ray County game, if we use it right.
But if we become overconfident and
start thinking we’re better than what
we are, it can provide us with a false
sense of security and we can be
facing a big loss next weekend.”
Holbrooks, who scored the Bull
dogs’ first touchdown in the first
quarter, led all rushers with 109 yards
on but 12 carries and one half of play,
while Chambers finished with 80
rushing yards on four carries and
completed three-of-six passes for 54
yards and two touchdowns.
