Salute to 4-H
4-H is nation's largest
organization for youth
Imagine the entire city of Colum
bus filled with kids age 9 to 19.
Georgia’s 4-H educational program
could do it.
The 4-H program reaches more
than 178,000 youngsters in the state,
making Georgia one of the most ac
tive 4-H states in the country. Forsyth
County itself claims more than 800
4H’ers
Statewide, a third of the 4-H mem
bers come from urban and surburban
homes. Another 65 percent live in
rural areas.
Agricultural projects still lead the
list for popular projects so this youth
program still has its roots in agricul
ture. However, plenty of other non
farm projects fill out the choices.
Projects include plants and soils, food
and nutrition, photography, public

4-H offers opportunities not found in any other club of it’s kind.
One of these opportunities was experienced by Devin Wright and
Kerensa Shoemake. These 4-H’ers served as pages for the Georgia
State Legislature. With the help of Rep. Bill Barnett, they learned
about how laws are made and how state government works. Devin
Wright said “being a page is something I will never forget.”

Local county 4-H programs are the
heart of the nation’s largest youth
organization. The County Extension
office coordinates resources and
plans programs. The county Exten
sion agents are assisted by the Exten
sion Service faculty at the University
of Georgia.
State and federal Extension spe
cialists provide consultation, agent
training, youth training and educatio
nal materials to support county 4-H
activities. The educational materials
are prepared with the help of trained
educators.
We believe that 4-H clubs will con
tinue to provide valuable experiences
for young people in Forsyth County.
As the nation celebrates National 4-
H Week October 7-13 with the theme,
“4-H - Building on Experience" For
syth County should be especially
proud of it’s outstanding youth.

Members of 4-H Clubs serve an important function In Forsyth County, but perhaps one of the most
important projects the 4-H’ers undertake is that of helping with the annual rabies clinics. The clinics
are held every spring and 4-H’ers go throughout Forsyth County helping veterinarians to vaccinate
people’s pets. This year’s clinic was a great success, and helping were 4-H members shown above:
Laurie Pirkle, Geoffrey Allen, Doug Nelson and Dede Thomas.
