Religion
There's no such thing as easy faith
The mission of the church in the
world is reconciliation between God
and all mankind and all people with
each other. It will not just happen
without us paying the price of devo
tion. You don’t get something for
nothing or there are no free lunches,
is another way to state this fact.
Yet, we live in a bargain-crazy
society where flea markets, garage
sales and bargain hunters abound.
Some people go wild to get bargains,
and that is great if you need what you
buy, but many buy things they don’t
really need or will ever need just
because it was a great bargain!
This reminds me of a once-in-a
lifetime bargain I just could not pass
up one day, when I bought 10 ink pens
for only 59 cents. “What a bargain,” I
The words
from our
mouths
We hear the phrase, “You are what
you eat,” but, we also put a lot of
weight at times behind what we say.
Do we mean what we say or are our
words phony?
In one year’s time, the average
person’s words would fill 132 books,
400 pages in length! This means that
if you live to be 70, you’ll probably
speak the equivalent of nearly 9,000
400-page books.
The Bible has much to say about
the words that come from our
mouths. One of the Ten Command
ments prohibited the use of God's
name in vain. And one of the Israelite
proverbs was, "Seest thou a man that
is hasty in his words? There is more
hope of a fool than of him” (Proverbs
29:20).
Thousands to attend Baptist rally
ATLANTA Several thousand per
sons are expected to attend the First
Annual Inspirational Rally of the
Georgia Baptist Convention to be held
at the Augusta Civic Center on Nov.
11.
The rally precedes the opening
session of the annual meeting of the
Georgia Baptist Convention.
Eight ways to improve health
(EDITOR’S NOTE: THis health
information is published as a commu
nity service of the Georgia Hospital
Association and Forsyth County Hos
pital.)
It’s estimated that as many as
seven of the 10 leading causes of
death in the United States could be
reduced through commonsense
changes in lifestyles. That's what the
following eight tips are all about.
1. Reduce saturated fat and choles
terol in the diet. Foods containing
these products may increase the risk
of heart attack. You can still have
enjoyable meals by: eating fish and
poultry, which contain less saturated
fat than meat; cooking with polyun
saturated vegetable oils and marga
rines; using skim milk; and eating
only two or three egg yolks per week.
2. Control high blood pressure. High
blood pressure increases the risk of
heart attack, stroke or kidney failure
if it remains untreated. To control
high blood pressure, you may change
eating habits, such as decreasing salt
(sodium) intake; reduce, if over
weight; and learn to manage stress.
Medication may be required in some
cases, and not smoking is a must.
3. Get regular check-ups. Establish
relationships with a family physician
and dentist. Know your family’s med
ical history and advise your physi
cian of any unusual tendencies.
4. Maintain proper weight levels. If
you must limit your calories, use
vegetables such as potatoes, corn or
lima beans sparingly. You may sub
stitute one serving (one-half cup) of
one of these for one serving of bread

thought. “This is the bargain of the
year!”
That fantasy lasted until I got home
and opened the pens and discovered
that not one single pen would write. If
I had thought it through, I would have
realized that a six-cent pen couldn’t
be much!
Enough worldly stuff. Now let’s
hear the spiritual message in all this.
We can’t bargain with God and there

And James wrote, “And if any one
does not offend in speech never
says the wrong things he is a fully
developed character and a perfect
man, able to control his whole body
and to curb his entire nature” (James
3:2, Amplified Bible).
What we say is a reflection of what
we are (Matthew 12:34). If there is
envy and strife and contention in our
hearts, our words will show them. If
there is peace, joy and love, our
words will show them. What kind of
heart do your words reveal? Is your
tongue used in blasphemy, in rebel
lion, in pride, in contention? Or is it
an instrument in the hands of God to
proclaim His goodness and love?
The pre-convention rally will fea
ture outstanding inspirational partic
ipants from across the nation.
E.V. Hill will be the keynote
speaker for the meeting. Dr. Hill is
pastor of the Mount Zion Missionary
Baptist Church, Los Angeles, Calif.
Musicians for the evening will in
or cereal.
5. If you smoke, stop. If you don’t
smoke, don’t start. Smoking in
creases the risk of heart attack. The
nicotine contained in a cigarette
makes the heart beat faster and, as a
result, work harder and require more
oxygen. The carbon monoxide from
tobacco smoke reduces the amount of
oxygen carried to the heart.
6. Avoid accidents or injuries. Wear
seatbelts at all times. Learn and
follow safety rules on the job. Take a
first aid class to be prepared in an
emergency.
7. Cope with stress by learning to
relax. Three of the most effective
ways to combat tension are medita
tion, exercise and good old-fashioned
laughter.
Laughter is an excellent antidote to
pain, as pointed out in Norman Cous
in’s book, "Anatomy of an Illness."
He discovered when seriously ill that
10 minutes of belly laughter gave him
two hours of pain-free sleep. The next
time you share a big laugh, see how
good and relaxing it feels.
8. Check with your physician before
taking oral contraceptives. In some
women, “the pill” may be associated

is no such thing as easy faith. In the
time of the prophet Malachi, the
people of Israel were trying to short
change God with bargain religion.
They were offering God second-rate
service.
As a result, their faith had become
anemic, like the faith of many of us
has become anemic. Malachi was
charged by God to give the people’s
faith a fresh challenge. He lays it on
the line by saying that if the people
are not sincere, he might as well close
down the temple. They had allowed
the faith to become polluted as we
have. They were trying to give God
their leftovers instead of their first
fruits, and He didn’t like it much!
Too many people in our time are

over God’s eyes, trying to get by with
bargain religion. We are not giving of
our best and the life of Christ’s
churches is suffering as a result, and
the farces of evil are gaining control.
We offer lame offerings of our
selves in partial service and expect
great things from God. When will we
learn that we receive in direct mea
sure to what we give of ourselves?
If your faith, your church, is not
what you want it to be, then you are
not giving yourself as God wants you
to, to your faith and your chinch. God
takes no pleasure in our self-decep
tion and our weak faith. He can only
honor us when we first honor Him by
being honorable. If the people’s offer
ing is blemished, there is no healing
in the land. Think about it!
Appropriate markers have been
erected which tell the story of Daniel
Marshall’s ministry and his role in
the founding of Kiokee Baptist
Church, the first continuing Baptist
church in Georgia. Both his son Abra
ham and his grandson Jabez suc
ceeded him as pastors of Kiokee.
Several prominent Baptist leaders
will participate in the dedication
service at the Old Kiokee Baptist
Church building, including Nelson L.
Price, president, Georgia Baptist
Convention; Waldo P. Harris, chair
man, history committee, Georgia
Baptist Convention; and James N.
Griffith, executive director-trea
surer, Georgia Baptist Convention
sion of the Georgia Baptist Conven
tion which convenes cm Monday
evening at the Civic Center.
Convention president, Nelson L.
Price, who is completing his second
and final term in office, will also
preside at the rally on Sunday eve
ning.
