I—FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS-WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1904
Junior highs vital to
foundation of success
By Ronnie Jackson
Forsyth County Bultdopi K—d Coach
Last week I had the opportunity to
speak to the North Forsyth Wildcats’
Booster Club, and I came away with
the feeling that some good things
were really beginning to happen.
There were some mighty fine
looking young players at the meeting
and afterwards, while talking with
them, I couldn't help but get the
feeling that the future was looking
brighter for Forsyth County football.
I have also had the chance to watch
Otwell and South Forsyth play, and I
feel the same way about them.
The thing that I have to remember
is that in recent years, the players at
the junior high level have dropped out
of football before reaching the high
school program at an alarming rate.
There can be many reasons for the
ninth graders losing interest football
when they get to the high school, but
it seems to me that the single biggest
factor is that football is a demanding
sport that takes a lot of time and
effort.
Jayvee game cancelled
The Forsyth County junior varsity
Bulldogs’ hopes of avenging an early
season fW) loss to Pickens County
were dashed last week as a misunder
standing over the date of the football
game resulted in the contest’s
cancellation.
On Forsyth’s 1964 schedule, the
game was slated for Thursday, Oct.
11, but Pickens officials had the game
listed for Thursday, Oct. 4, a date
when the Bulldogs were playing
Winder.
Unable to reach agreement on an
alternative date, the schools’ team
officials were forced to cancel the
game. The cancellation leaves the
junior varsity Bulldogs (2-3) with one

When that time and effort are re
warded with success, it is the great
est thrill in the world. When it is
instead rewarded with defeat, it be
comes a demoralizing venture.
Therefore, winning becomes the
key to building a continually success
ful program. Winning breeds win
ning. And an example of the
importance of the junior high school
football program in any county was
brought out in a recent article that
appeared in the Atlanta Constitution:
“Ever wonder why Valdosta High
School football is strong year after
year? Take a look at the Wildcats’
lower school programs. Junior high
coach Norman Sainz has lost only
once in the last five years while
fielding four teams on the seventh-,
eighth- and ninth-grade levels. “We
put about $30,000 a year into our
junior high program,’’ said Valdosta
varsity head coach Nick Hyder.
“That’s more money than I used to
use to run the entire athletic program
a few years ago when I was at West
Rome.’’

turnover as the offensive line gave
Chambers enough time to wait for
Sutko to break free ova* the middle
and hit the tight end for a 16-yard
touchdown pass.
• Forsyth’s fourth touchdown came
on a legitimate 11-play, 63-yard drive
which was kept alive by Chambers’
18-yard scramble on a fourth down
play that the Indians appeared to
have sealed for a loss.
• Tim “The Blade’’ McCallister
capped that drive by taking in a
Chambers pass, spinning out of the
grasp of one tackier, shedding the
efforts of another and high stepping
away from a third to reach the end
zone.
• Chambers completely demora
lized the Lumpkin tribe with a 60-
yard touchdown gallop on the first
play from scrimmage in the second
half, cutting upfield on an option
keeper, sprinting to and down the left
sideline and avoiding a last-gasp
tackle with a cutback at the five to
cross the goal line.
• Milford’s vicious hit of Joey
Allred broke up potential first down
pass completion on Lumpkin’s ensu
ing possession and forced the Indians
into a punting situation.
• Backup quarterback Robby
Payne came on in relief of Chambers
to toss a 33-yard scoring strike to
McCallister.
• Shook’s bone-jarring tackle of
James Rostallon forced a fumble
which set up the Bulldogs’ final touch
down as defensive end Larry Jenkins
(who contributed six tackles to lead
the team) pounced on the ball on the
Lumpkin 19.
• Junior varsity running back Todd
Ballard ended the scoring by bounc
ing off a would-be tackier at the 4,
spinning and skirting the right side to
dive across the goal line.
• Ingram gave the Bulldogs’ their

fourth turnover of the night with his
interception of freshman Jason Aber
crombie’s pass at the Lumpkin 34.
(Abercrombie’s first seven passes of
the night were either incomplete or
intercepted and his lone completion
wait for oily a two-yard advance.)
• And Mitchell and Ingram pre
served the shutout by batting down
Rostallon’s halfback pass at the goal
line in the waning seconds.
With such an array of superlatives,
one might think Coach Jackson’s job
was made easy. But a 48-0 third
quarter lead puts a coach into a
contradictory dilemma.
“It’s nice to have a big lead like
that. You don’t have to worry about
the outcome of the game and it takes
on an air of being less serious.
“But it does put you in an unusual
situation as a coach. We didn’t want
to run up the score or embarrass
(Lumpkin) we’ve been on the other
end of that kind of score and we know
what it feels like.
“At the same time, we wanted to
give our backups and junior varsity
people some playing time, and we
especially wanted to see Robby
(Payne) run the Veer with Milford
and Jenkins (in the backfield),”
Jackson said. That backfield tandem
was together for only one offensive
series, however, a six-play, 50-yard
drive that ended with Payne’s pass to
McCallister for the score.
After that, Jackson called off the
dogs, so to speak, and limited his
junior varsity backfield of Payne,
Ballard and Ingram to repeated dive
plays and still the Bulldogs move in
for one final score.
“The important thing is that every
body played the younger players
got to get in the game and see what
varsity football is like. It would be
nice to be in a situation like that
again,” Jackson said.
