Analysis: For the second straight week, Forsyth County will be
facing a tribe of Indians, but Murray County’s version will present a
more formidable foe than the Lumpkin County team the Bulldogs
walloped last Friday. Murray features no less than three legitimate
college prospects on its senior-ladened squad and is riding high on
a five-game winning streak that has seen the Indians scalp
opponents by an average score of 31 -6.
Murray's smallest margin of victory came in its 19-9 triumph over
LaFayette and the Indians will be looking for a 6-0 record and a Top
Ten nod from the pollsters with a victory over homecoming
opponent Forsyth this Friday.
Murray's multiple set offense operates primarily from the Wish
bone, ironic in that the Indian's balanced attack actually relies on its
aerial raids of opposing defenses more than on its running game.
Quarterback Patrick Baynes (No. 12, 6-1, 177) is the man to
watch in the Murray offense. The senior already owns the Murray
record for most completions and passing yardage in a single game
(25 and 321, respectively) and has placed the team’s single season
and career marks in jeopardy of falling.
The strong-armed signal caller, who also executes the option and
runs well, will throw from anywhere on the field and spreads his
k passes among a variety of receivers, but senior tight end/flanker
; Keith Swilling (No. 85, 6-0, 204) holds the team record for most
receptions (12) in a game and is the man Baynes looks for in the
clutch. With good speed and soft hands, running back/split end
Roger Rainey (No. 88, 5-9, 150) is also a big play threat.
Two hundred pound linemen Chris Thornbury (No. 63) and Todd
Sprouse (No. 61) anchor the Indians’ defensive front and are
> backed by senior linebackers Swilling and Winston Massengale (No.
76, 6-3, 219), who have manhandled opponents all year and have
college scouts drooling with their strength, quick pursuit and bone
jarring tackles.
Defensive end Brian Smith (No. 62, 5-10, 166) also gives
Murray’s defense big play potential as does Baynes, who is waiting
in the secondary when opponents go to the air.

strong safety, comes on the keeper
if be attacks the quarterback, the
pitch goes to the trailing halfback.
But if the defender takes on the pitch
man, the quarterback cuts upfield for
the run.
“There’s a lot of pressure on the
quarterback in the Veer. It’s not like
you’re just standing back there and
handing off. Randy has to read the
defense 70 to 80 percent of our plays.
“But he handles it well. In fact, he
seems to thrive on it I think he
performs better under pressure,”
Hogan said.
“If was tough at first, because I
was having to think about what I was
doing. But now, we’ve done it so much
that I don’t think about it. I just make
the read and do it. When you start
thinking about it, it throws the timing
off and messes everything up,”
Chambers said.
“But I like it I know that if I
make the right read, that we’ve got a
chance to break a big play. Paul
(Marks) and Alex (Holbrooks) are
real good runners and the offensive
line is getting better and better. They
did a great job against Lumpkin.
Chambers didn’t do so badly him
self, and it was his 60-yard touchdown
on an option keeper that quickly
dashed any notions of a second half
comeback by Lumpkin. “It was like I
was in slow motion after I got past the
line,” Chambers said reflecting on
the run. “I had my eyes on the goal
line and knew I had a chance to score.
But it seemed like it took me forever
to get there.”
It was against Lumpkin two years
ago that Chambers was dubbed with
the nickname of “Crazy Legs” by
teammate Phillip Roberts. Seeing
action in an eventual 34-6 Bulldog
victory, Chambers turned in a run in
which he juked a Lumpkin defender
into falling down on a tackle attempt
and then leaped over him to pick up
additional yardage. “They started
calling me Crazy Legs after that, and
it’s just stuck,” Chambers laughed.
And what about “Boo?” “Shawn
(Jackson) and (Mike) Slaton started
calling me Cham-800 I don’t know
why and it’s just got shortened to
Boo,” Chambers related.
The label of “Winner” requires no
such explanation.
BULLDOG NOTES: Joining Cham
bers as the Bulldogs’ Players of the
Week are junior comerback Todd
Milford and senior kicker Sean Te
bor. Milford took defensive honors by
picking off one pass, batting down

another potential completion and
forcing a fumble which the Bulldogs’
Glenn Sutko recovered. He also broke
up another pass by delivering a bone
jarring hit to Joey Alldred as he
leaped to catch a Jason Abercrombie
pass. Tebor captured the specialty
teams award by successfully convert
ing 6-of-7 PAT kicks (the miss came
as the result of a bad hold) and
booming six of his eight kickoffs
inside the 5-yard line, including three
that reached the end zone...
Junior Larry Jenkins started his
second game at defensive end in
place of junior Lee Jarvis, who will
miss the rest of the season due to an
aggravated neck injury. An injury
last year resulted in a slightly
cracked vertebrae, which was not
discovered until recently, after what
was thought to be a pinched nerve
forced him to sit out the Etowah
game. With time, the injury caused
calcium deposits to develop into a
spur, which began putting painful
pressure on a nerve in the neck.
Jarvis is taking medication and the
rapy to dissolve the problematic
spur, and hopes to return next
spring...

Alex Holbrooks’ 12-carry, 109-yard
performance against Lumpkin
pushed the senior halfback’s season
rushing average back over six yards.
Holbrooks now leads the Bulldogs
with 391 yards on 62 carries for a 6.3-
yard average...
Paving the way for Holbrooks and
the rest of the Forsyth runners was
senior guard Jack Search, who was
found downfield blocking almost as
often as the backs...
The “s” that was missing from the
end of Holbrooks for so long has been
found it was being given to junior
lineman Tommy Andrew, who has to
date been listed as Andrews.
