Fall is good time to add lime to your lawn
How sweet is the soil around your
home?
If you don’t know, you need to find
out. But don’t go out and taste a
spoonful have it tested to find out
its pH.
The pH shows how acid your soil is
the lower the number, the more
acid the soil. “Sweet" soil is simply
soil that's only slightly acid.
Fortunately, lime may be the
cheapest thing your lawn needs.

“Farmers are asked to nominate
candidates of their choice by Oct. 29
to be on the ASC county committee
ballot," says William Neisler, chair
person of the Forsyth ASCS county
committee.
The ASC county committee election
will be conducted from Nov. 23 to
Dec. 3 by mail ballot.
ASC committees are responsible
for managing government farm pro

needs of individual producers, ASC

Healthy land, healthy people
Ever hear your friends say they
wish they could gain some weight?
Not likely. We are probably the most
overweight people in history.
We eat more than we need for many
reasons, but one of the biggest is that
our food is the best buy in the world.
Food as a portion of income is cheap
in this country because our agricultu
ral system is so efficient. And, it is
efficient because we still have good
productive soil.
That is the main message of the
Food and Fitness Campaign now un
derway throughout the country. The
people involved in furnishing food,
those who work to promote good
health, and the USDA have joined in
sponsoring the campaign to call at
tention to our abundant food supply,
our need to eat properly and get
regular exercise and the abundant
resources that we use to make it all
possible.

Wood-Using Industries in Georgia,
a 1984 directory and report of timber
utilization in 1963, has been com

mission and is being distributed by
the agency’s district offices and
county units throughout the state.

Forest Ranger Edward Wright, of

comprehensive directory and report
lists enterprises in this county which
are forest related, and provides infor

description of products and other

; Statewide primary industries, such

as raw material, and secondary in
dustries, including furniture plants
and other enterprises that utilize lum
ber and other partially manufactured
material, are included in the publica
tion. The directory also lists 16 pulp

because winter rains help activate
the lime in soil. But the best time to
add lime is whatever you know you
need it.
Why is it so important to know the
pH of your soil? Your grass has a

Neisler said. Forsyth County fanners
have the opportunity to nominate
persons they feel would best serve the
farm community. Fanners have re
ceived petition forms by mail and are
now submitting diem to the county
ASCS office.
A few basic considerations should
be kept in mind when circulating
petitions, Neisler said. In order to be
valid, petitions must be limited to one
nominee each, must include written
certification that the nominee is will
ing to serve if elected, must be signed
by at least three eligible farm voters

Surely you understand the
relationship between healthy land

neighbors don’t. They don’t know that
erosion hurts them. They don’t appre

The utilization report shows that
round timber use in 1983, excluding
pulp wood, firewood and fence posts,
totaled 2.9 billion board feet, for a 19
percent increase over 1960 and it
shows that 210 sawmills processed 82

certain pH level at which all the
nutrients in the soil are most avail
able to it. If the pH of your soil is
wrong, you could be starving your
lawn.
So what’s the best pH for your
grass? And how much lime should
you add to the soil? It varies.
In most cases, centipede doesn’t
need lime. The pH for good centipede
growth is 5.5 and it will tolerate a pH
below 5. Other grasses need around 6,
in the county and must be received by
the Oct. 29 deadline. Farmers may
circulate or sign nominating petitions
tor as many candidates as they
choose.
“Fanners should petition for and
elect those individuals they feel
would do a good job as a member of
the ASC committee. The election of
concerned farmers to positions on
ASC committees is essential in the
administration of farm programs,"
Neisler stud.
ASCS welcomes all valid petitions.
The opportunity to nominate, vote
and be elected to office is guaranteed
to all farmers regardless of race,
religion, sex, age, color or national
origin.

Whatever grass you have, you can’t
know if you need to lime your lawn
or how much lime to add if you
don’t know your soil's pH. So you
need to test it.
You need to get a soil sample that’s

Most of the time turf grasses need
dolomitic limestone. Dolomitic lime
stone raises the pH, but also adds two
vital elements, calcium and magne

The county Extension office will

you can tell if you need to add lime,
what kind and how much.
