In the past, I’ve mentioned a few of
the more unusual requests for infor
mation that have come to the cham
ber office.
For instance: “How do you carve a
grapefruit?” or, “Will the lake be
open this weekend?”
Got a new one the other day from a
Yankee psychology professor. In ad
dition to the usual tourister informa
tion, he wanted to know who dealt in
Clay to lead Quarter Challenge
Ralph Clay has been elected volun
teer chairperson for Cumming’s
Quarter Challenge Campaign to help
raise funds for the foundation while
setting a Guinness World Record.
More than 200 communities
throughout the state will participate
in setting a new world’s record for
collecting and placing the longest line
of quarters ever laid, edge to edge,
more than 9 miles.
Each community will have a goal
for the length of quarters they must
collect.
Arrests are expected
on alcohol violations
After a three-week joint under
cover investigation by city and
county law enforcement officials,
several arrest warrants are expected
soon for local store owners on
charges of selling alcoholic bever
ages to minors.
The investigation came as a result
of numerous complaints from area
parents that some Cumming stores
sell beer and wine to minors. Georgia
state law sets a minimum age of 19
for buying or consuming alcohol.
Aided by several persons under age
19 with parental consent, investiga
tors have documented with hidden
tape recorders and cameras at least
six different occasions in which a
local store sold beer to a minor, police
reports said.
Misdemeanor charges of selling
alcohol to a minor are pending,
according to Cumming Police Chief
Ricky Padgett.
Padgett said that every local store
that sells beer and wine was checked
at least twice.
“Most of the stores wouldn’t sell
alcohol to a minor. We had more than
one complaint against a couple,” he
said.
Padgett, who was assisted by For
syth County Sheriff’s Department
deputies in the investigation, said the
investigation came after his depart

live turtles. Well, come to find out,

did, provide me with almost more
information than I thought I wanted.
(My own interest has pretty much
been limited to turtle soup.)
Sent the professor what he’d asked

if he was doing psychological studies
on turtles, and did he expect Southern

“Through the support of our citi
zens and businesses, I’m sure we will
surpass the goal of 100 feet worth of
quarters,” said Clay. “This is the
most unusual fund-raising event to
come along in awhile, but the pro
ceeds are going to a good cause, the
Kidney Foundation.
He continued, “Kidney disease is a
common occurrence in Georgia. By
giving generously to the Quarter
Challenge, our community can help
support the Foundation’s research,
patient service and organ donation
ment and the sheriff’s office had
received several complaints.
“We are not out there trying to
harrass anyone. Our goal is to pre
vent stores from selling alcohol to
minors,” Chief Padgett said.
Selling alcohol to minors is a misde
meanor, punishable by up to SI,OOO
fine and/or up to 12 months in jail.
Officials declined to name the
stores where buys were made by
minors until formal charges have
been presented.
Last week, Charles Tatum, owner
of Carlos’ Vineyard, a local package
store, was found not guilty in State
Court on charges of selling alcohol to
a minor.
Accident on
tractor claims
life of man here
A 54-year-old Cumming man was
killed Sunday when a five-ton tractor
he was using to pack silage at a local
farm flipped over on top of him,
sheriff’s reports said.
Bill C. Britt of Holtzclaw Road was
pronounced dead on arrival at For
syth County Hospital by Dr. Wallace
Dyer after Mr. Britt was found
pinned beneath a Massey Furgeson
1155 tractor, according to Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Department reports.
Mr. Britt was apparently climbing
a steep pile of soft silage when the
front wheels of the tractor popped up
and it flipped, crushing him beneath
the tractor, sheriff’s reports said.

ANTIBIOTICS
Q. Can antibiotics take the
place of other types of treat
ment for periodental disease?
A. The purpose of antibiotics is
to control infection. Based on
that, they may be prescribed
early on in severe forms of
periodontal disease. They are
also given after treatment and
as an adjunctive medication to
patients with rapidly progress
ing periodontal disease.
However, long term use of an
tibiotics is not substitute for the
accepted professional methods
for treating periodontal
