I—FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1984
Probe Fair set
for Wednesday
More than 30,000 Georgia high school students and
their parents will explore the world of post-secondary
education this fall at one of the statewide Probe Fairs,
including the Forsyth County mini-fair scheduled for
Wednesday, Oct. 17.
The mini-fair will be held at Forsyth County High
School from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Probe is the name of the organized tour which attracts
admissions counselors from more than 200 non-profit
educational institutions to shopping malls ami high
school gyms all around Georgia.
The fairs feature several hours of informal browsing
among an arrangement of brochure-filled tables. School
and college representatives staff each table to discuss
costs, courses, scholarships, campus life, admissions
and other aspects of post-secondary education at their
schools.
Other local fairs include: Oct. 15, Brookwood High,
5:30-8:30 p.m.; Oct. 16, Gainesville, 5-8 p.m.
Candy Hammond to head
Christmas Seal Campaign
Candy Hammond, director of cardiopulmonary serv
ices at Forsyth County Hospital, has been named 1984
Christmas Seal chairperson for Forsyth County, Ameri
can Lung Association of Georgia officials announced.
“Although the official kickoff for the annual
Christmas Seal Campaign is not until Nov. 8, prepara
tions are underway to make this year’s effort the most
successful yet,” Ms. Hammond said. “Last year’s
statewide total raised was $582,000 and we are pulling
out all stops to exceed that amount this year.”
Christmas Seal donations begain in 1902 and funds still
raised in this manner go to fight such lung diseases as
emphysema, tuberculosis, asthma and others, as well as
cigarette smoking and air pollution.
According to Ms. Hammond, “More than 40 million
men, women and children suffer some respiratory
disorder. It is for these that we urge you to generously
answer you Christmas Seal letter and support other
community fund raising projects of the Lung Associa
tion.
Job survey
to begin
Monday
The U.S. Bureau of the Census will
conduct its regular survey on employ
ment and unemployment in the Gum
ming and Forsyth County area during
the week of Oct. 15-20, according to
Forrest P. Cawley Jr., director of the
bureau’s regional office in Atlanta.
In October, additional survey ques
tions will provide information on
school enrollment and computer us
age for both children and adults.
The survey is conducted for the
U.S. Department of Labor in a scien
tifically designed sample of approxi
mately 71,000 households throughout
the United States.
Employment and unemployment
statistics based on results of the sur
vey are used to provide a continuing
measure of the economic health of the
nation.
For example, in August, 1984, the
survey indicated that of the 113.5
million men and women in the civil
ian labor force, 105 million were
employed. The tuition’s unemploy
ment rate remained the same at 7.5
percent.
