Shopper is mystified by 7-cent refund check
Dear super saver: I have used
coupons for many years. Now, with
double coupons I save even more. I
also get at least two weeks worth of
free groceries a year by getting
double stamps at the grocery store
each week.
I received this refund check
recently and I don’t know what to do
with it; 7 cents won’t pay for the
postage.

1964 THE PU.LSBUPY COMPANY
Mrs. J. Baker, Mesa, Ariz.
Dear Mrs. Baker: I, too, was
puzzled when I looked over your
refund from a recent Gillette Dry
Idea promotion. Your 7-cent refund
wouldn’t even pay for processing the
cashing of the check. I contacted
Esther Reed, consumer service
representative for The Gillette Co..
Ms. Reed agreed that the 7-cent
check must have been issued in error,
but it was necessary for her to do
some detective work to determine
what the correct amount of the refund
should have been. Since
clearinghouses that handle refund
promotions deal with thousands of
refund checks at a time, I asked Ms.
Reed also to check to verify if your 7-
cent check was an isolated incident.
Ms. Reed responded: “Our
promotional group has informed me

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1984-
chat the 7-cent check was issued in
error and was an isolated incident.
Our offers are handled by outside
agencies, and unfortunately, an
occasional error does occur. We are
unaware of any problem until
consumers, or someone representing
them, contact us directly. We will
write Mrs. Baker to explain what
happened and will send her refund
directly from this office.”
By the time you read this column,
you should have a new check in the
amount of 79 cents as a refund for the
purchase price of dry Idea.
Dear super saver: Two years ago I
laughed at people who went to all the
trouble (or so I thought) to clip out
coupons. But then I didn’t own a
growing puppy, either, when I bought
a dog and discovered the high cost of
feeding one, I was surprised at how
much I could save by using pet food
coupons.
Since then I have been a die-hard
couponer and it’s really paid off. I
now have a tool shed full of dog food,
all top name brands, which I have
gotten free or almost free. The
highest price I’ve paid lately for a 5-
pound bag is 50 cents.
Since being introduced to coupon
savings I have branched out and now
have a laundry room full of top name
brand detergent and liquid soaps
purchased at great discounts, not to
mention all of the cereals, soda pop,
bar soaps and other products on
which I save. In addition to this, these
name-brand products come in handy
for refunds galore. I’d have to say
that I’ve tripled by savings!
Rosettia Cora, York, Pa.
Dear Rosettia: Most consumers
need an extra nudge when it comes to
finding new ways to save. Your nudge
was your dog, mine was the
combination of inflation, a new house
and a baby on the way. It’s
unfortunate, however, that people
need an “excuse” to save, especially
since the savings are right there for
the clipping.
With the average family of four
spending in excess of SIOO per week at
the grocery store, even a modest 10
percent in weekly coupon savings
($10) adds up to a savings of $520
annually that’s five weeks worth of
free groceries, a new color television
set, a good start toward a family
vacation or a nice fat Christmas club
check. I hope that your letter
provides that necessary little nudge
to get other readers to join the
savings bandwagon!
Today’s super saver is Mrs.
Michael Ballard of Clifton Park,
N.Y., who writes: “I would like to
share with your readers a great buy I
found that shows that refunding
really does help to save money. My
local store had 12-ounce cans of
Sunkist lemonade on special for 59
cents each. I had a refund offer form
for $2 back that required four proofs
of purchase. I bought four cans and
my net price per can after my refund
was 9 cents! I now keep all of my
refund cheeks in a separate savings
account and save the money for a
rainy day!”
Mrs. Ballard will receive SSO worth
of current refund forms and a copy of
Inflation-Proof recipes for being
chosen this week’s super saver.
