Our source of strength
is found in his presence
In a given life, over the long haul,
we all face pretty much the same
circumstances. For some, tragedy,
illness and hardship all seem to hit at
once; while for others, these obsta
cles are spead out more over time.
Nevertheless, we all face the same
basic circumstances over our life
time.
If you are facing obstacles, hard
ship and sorrow in your life right now,
you have two choices: the first is to
give in to the circumstances and let
them crush or immobilize you or
make you bitter. This is the easier of
the two choices. The second choice is
to rise up in hopeful faith and deal
with your obstacles and grow through
and from them. This is God’s way and
it works.
In Him we move, have our being
Some scientists, according to a
story by Harold Bredesen, decided to
develop a fish that could live outside
of water. So, selecting some healthy
red herring, they bred and crossbred,
hormoned and chromosomed until
they produced a fish that could exist
out of water.
But, the project director wasn’t
satisfied. He suspected that although
the fish had learned to live on dry
land, it still had a secret desire for
Keeping good records
help tax deductions
Keeping good records, including
checks and even a tax diary, can help
you take tax deductions in a variety
of areas, according to the Georgia
Extension Service.
“Charitable contributions, travel
expenses and child care expenses are
three areas many of us may have
legitimate deductions,” says Mimi
Shumard, a family resource devel
opment specialist.
“But you have to know if and how
you may qualify.”
Shumard says, “you can deduct for
legitimate charitable contributions
whether you itemize or not. For 1984,
you can take $1 for every $4 up to $75.
That’s nearly S2O for contributing $75
to your favorite charities. In 1985,
you’ll be allowed 50 percent of all
contributions and in 1986,100 percent
of all contributions.”
You also need to keep records when
you do volunteer work, according to
Shumard. Keep a record of charitable
travel, including milage and parking
fees. You can deduct the cost gas and
oil, but not depreciation on your vehi
cle; or you can deduct 9 cents a mile.
“Keep up with out-of-pocket ex
penses, too,” she said. “You can
deduct the cost of telephone calls,
stamps and even the cost of ingre
dients or materials for posters or
baked goods.”
If you make an overnight trip that
benefits a charity, you can deduct a
reasonable amount for meals and
lodging, she said.
“When you make cash contribu
tions, get a receipt or use a check so
you’ll have some kind of record,”
said Shumard.
“Membership dues to museums or
symphonies aren’t allowed if the dues
entitle you to special privileges, and
the cost of a raffle ticket for a prize
isn’t allowed.”
"One other thing you might want to
consider is contributing property like
stocks or real estate. These invest
ments go up in value and will be taxed
as long term capital gains if you sell
them.
Shumard suggests that you check
with a tax expert before making any
large-scale donation of this type.
To claim a child care credit, both
parents must work and maintain a
home for a child under 15 years old,
she said.
“The credit is figured as a percent
age of the first $2,400 you spend for
the care of one child or the first $4,800
you spend for two or more children,”
she said. “The allowable percentage
depends on the amount of your ad

If we live in faith so as to glorify
God, then God will give us strength to
overcome life’s hardships by bring
ing hope to the future when the obsta
cles are resolved or healed by time.
Our problem is our impatience and
lack of faith to wait upon the Lord and
trust in His care. God does not send
hardship but He does arrive on the
scene at the same time they befall us
to offer us guidance and strength if
we only recognize His presence.
In a church bulletin, I read the
Japanese version of the 23rd Psalm
written by Toki Miyashiro, a Japa
nese Christian. I like it and it inspires
me to think of God in a comforting
manner. I share it with you in the
hope it will give you hope in God:

water.
“Re-educate it,” he said. “Change
its very desires.”
So again they went to work, this
time retraining even the strongest
justed gross income. The amount of
money spent for child care can in
clude any expense that lets you take,
keep or look for a job.”
Payments to a nursery school or
day-care center are allowable,
according to Shumard, but not the
travel expenses to get the child there
and back. The credit does not include
the costs of education beyond kinder
garten.
“Just remember that to claim the
credit, you have to have children at
home who are under the age of 15,”
she said. “If your child turns 15 on
September 1, you can claim a child
care credit only through August. 31.”
You can’t deduct the cost of com
muting between home and your job,
says Shumard, but you can deduct
any unreimbursed cost of traveling
from job to job.
‘ ‘This deduction is limited to what it
costs to drive directly from one job
location to another,” she said. “The

would rather die than get wet. Even
humidity filled this new fish with
dread.
The director, proud of his triumph,
took the fish on tour. Well, quite
accidentally, according to official
reports, it happened the fish fell
into a lake. It sank to the bottom, eyes
and gills clamped shut, afraid to
move, lest it become wetter. And, of
course, it dared not breathe; every

If you’re looking for a new job, you
can’t take deductions if you’re trying
to find one in a different line of work.
However, you can deduct the cost of
looking for one in the same line of
work, even if you don’t find one.
If you go to the doctor often, or if
your doctor’s office is very far away,
it may pay you to keep good records
of your trips.

Office of planning part of Convention
[i
The Georgia Baptist Convention
has announced the establishment of
an office of planning and coordina
tion.
Elected as director of planning and
coordination was Julian T. Pipkin,
former director of the Convention’s
Division of Church Services and De
velopment.
Dr. Pipkin, a native of Vidalia who
grew up in Cairo, retired in Decem
ber after serving 28 years on the
convention staff. He has accepted the
new position on a part time basis.
James W. Griffith, executive direc
tor-treasurer of the Georgia Baptist
Convention, has reported that the
establishment of the new Office is the
result of a growing need for long
range planning and coordination in
the divisions and departments of the
State Missions program.
Griffith cited the rapid personnel
expansion and an increasing state
instinct said no. Yet, breathe it must.
So the fish drew a tentative gill-full.
Its eyes bulged. It breathed again and
flicked a fin. It breathed a third time
and wriggled with delight. Then it
darted away. The fish had discovered
water.
And with that same wonder, men
and women conditioned by a world
that rejects God, discover him. For in
Him we live and move and have our
being.
