Many women today keep working up until a very short time before they have their babies.
All it takes is a little planning, and following the suggestions you ’ll find below.
It used to be that when a woman
became pregnant she quit her job.
But no more.
That doesn’t, however, mean a
woman won’t go through all the
bodily and emotional changes that
take place during pregnancy.
But it needn’t be a problem. All
it takes is a few simple steps such
as the ones we’ve listed here.
How to cope
with morning sickness
It’s more than difficult to work up
to your full potential when you’re
nauseous.
But there are some ways of con
trolling your out-of-sorts stomach.
Most doctors, for example, rec
ommend you keep some sort of
non-acid, non-greasy food handy.
You might try keeping a box of
crackers in your desk.
Choose the childbirth
course that suits you
North Fulton Medical Center
offers a number of excellent
courses that can make having a
baby a more enjoyable experi
ence. And don’t worry. We can
make it convenient for you to
attend, even with your work
schedules. Want the details?

■ Congratulations—you’re

■ Seven months and counting
■ Big brother/big sister to-be
■ Positive infant parenting

■ CPR and First Aid Techniques

Some women get morning sick
ness as soon as they arise. If this
is the case, keep a box of crackers
on your bedside table, so you can
nibble before you even get up. And
in cases where you’re “morning
sick” all day, you might try eating
several small, bland meals instead
of a larger one.
In any case, it’s important you
do eat properly.
Don’t forget about
good nutrition
It’s easy to get so caught up in
your work that you don’t eat the

way you should. In any case, that’s
bad. When you’re pregnant, it can
be disastrous.
Force yourself to eat a well
balanced diet of proteins and vege
tables. Stay as far as possible from
fatty foods.
Eat food high in fiber to calm
hunger pangs and keep you
regular.
Avoid beverages that are high in
sodium or caffeine. And eat plenty
of cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese
and milk.
Control your cravings! As hard
as it may be, it can be a source of
too much of a good thing, and a lot
of extra calories.
Your doctor will probably also rec
ommend a prenatal vitamin. Take
them religiously. You and your baby
both need the extra help.
Smoking
Don’t do it. Smoking isn’t good for
anybody, but it can be especially
bad for your baby.
We know it won’t be easy to
quit. You’re under the pressure of
work and surrounded by smoking
co-workers.
But here are the facts. Smoking
has been directly related to spon
taneous miscarriages, stillbirths,
premature births and labor
complications.
Smoking can also prevent you
and your body from using certain
vitamins and minerals in the foods
you eat.
Women who smoke often have
smaller babies, and there’s an
increased chance of brain damage.
You’ve probably always wanted
to quit smoking. Now you have the
best reason ever to do it.
Exercise
Years ago, pregnant women went
to bed. But that’s not you, or you
wouldn’t be working.
In any case, doctors say you
need to get exercise. Don’t sit
at your desk too long; schedule
several regular breaks during the
day. Walk to lunch, or take a walk
when you get home. (A good pair
of support hose can help with that
extra weight you’re carrying
around.)
If you have a regular exercise
program, you can continue it
within reason. But, at the same
time, we’re not recommending
you start jogging. And if you feel

fatigued or uncomfortable at any
time, take it easy.
Avoid stress
This may be the hardest part of
working while you’re pregnant.
Rest
You will need to rest more. Your body is going through a
great many changes and you have a life growing inside you.
That takes a lot of energy.

Stay away from stressful situations
This is one time in life when you need to control the stress of the
work place. Set aside time to take it easy on yourself each day.
