Too much green stuff
for just a little cabbage
DEAR ABBY: I couldn’t agree
more with "Ashamed American
Mother,” who refuses to buy into the
Cabbage Patch craziness. I feel exac
tly as she does.
Cabbage Patch Kids have become
the new status symbol for American
youngsters. I am dumbstruck by the
number of otherwise intelligent, sen
sible adults buying into this mania
and fostering a frentic need in their
children to possess what? A cuddly
baby doll? Certainly there are cuddly
baby dolls galore that cost far less
than SSO to SIOO, do not require putting
one's name on a six-month waiting
list, and can be dressed, cuddled and
loved. But owning a Cabbage Patch
Kid is the newest form of snobbery.
When my daughter's peers are
older and into drugs, I want her to be
able to think for herself and say,
"No,” despite what everyone else is
doing.
I may be considered a "mean
mommy” by some, but I refuse to
follow along like one more sheep to
the cabbage patch. My daughter, in
fact, is rather proud of the fact that
she doesn't own one.

Distemper can strike
with very few signs
Canine distemper is the greatest
single disease threat to the world’s
dog population. Better than 50% of
the adult dogs that contract the dis
e se die from it and in puppies the
death rate may be as high as 80%.
Even if a dog does not die from the
disease, its health may be perma
nently impaired. A bout with distem
per can leave a dog’s nervous system
irreparably damaged with partial or
total paralysis. Although older dogs
may contract distemper, younger
dogs and puppies are the most sus
ceptible.
Distemper is caused by a tiny virus
and is highly contagious. The virus
may be transmitted through contact
with all body secretions from infected
dogs or from areas or objects con
taminated by infected animals. The
virus may also be borne by air cur
rents.
Although signs of distemper are not
always typical, the disease fre
quently begins with something like a

DEAR ABBY. My daughter is get
ting married soon. We are addressing
the wedding invitations, but here’s
the question: She and her fiance don’t
need any household items all they
really need is money. Would it be OK
to write something like that on the
invitations? And how should it be
worded?
- NO NAME, PLEASE
DEAR NO NAME: It is never OK to
ask for money instead of wedding
gifts. Should the bride and groom be
asked if they prefer money rather
than a gift, then, and only then, would
it be proper to indicate that money is
preferred.
severe cold. The first signs an owner
might notice are squinting and a
discharge of pus from the eyes.
Coughing, nasal discharge, a loss of
appetite, vomiting, and weight loss
are common. The sick animal may
develop bronchitis, pneumonia, diar
rhea, and in later stages nervous
signs of twitching, “fits”, or paraly
sis. Sometimes the inital signs may
be mild and go unrecognized, de
laying treatment until it’s too late to
be effective.
Dogs that survive a natural infec
tion usually develop sufficient immu
nity to protect them the rest of their
lives. Many dogs particularly pups
do not survive. The safest protec
tion is vaccination.

DEAR ABBY: I’ve been married
for nearly two years to a man I went
with for about a year. I thought we
had a great marriage until I found
some photos and love notes in his
briefcase. These items were from a
woman he works with. Abby, please
believe me, I wasn’t snooping; he had
gone to bed and I was looking for
some postage stamps.
I was thunderstruck! We have asso
ciated with this woman and her hus
band since we started going together,
but I never suspected there was any
thing between her and my husband.
My husband claims that the affair
lasted for only a short time and it was
over long before I found the items. He
begged me not to talk with her about
this, as it would make his life miser
able at work, and jobs are scarce.
After the initial shock subsided, I
forgave him and agreed not to bring it
up again. Now I’m wondering if I
would feel better knowing more about
what happened, when, and for how
long. Or would it be better to just try
to put it out of my mind? (It’s not
easy. Just because I don’t talk about
it doesn’t mean I don’t think about it.)

Unfortunately, scientists have not
yet developed a distemper vaccine
which will guarantee lifetime immu
nity with a single series of inocula
tions, but when given before the dog
becomes exposed to the virus, vac
cines are eery effective. Your veteri
narian can determine the most
advantageous time to begin vaccina
tion based upon his experience and
the general health of your dog.
For more information on canine
distemper contact your local veteri
narian or write to “Animal Health
Notes” at P. 0. Box 4185, Campus St

DEAR ABBY: I know a couple
whose daughter got pregnant when
she was in high school. She kept the
baby and her mother raised it while
she (the young mother) ran around
and got pregnant again.
Abby, my daughter will be taught
the facts of life as soon as she is old
enough to understand them. If she
decides to have sex before she’s will
ing to take responsibility for her
actions, she will have to pay the
consequences. In plain language, if
she gets pregnant, she will have two
choices: She will either have to put
the baby up for adoption or she will
have the baby, stay home 24 hours a
day, seven days a week and take care
of it like any other mother!
If she wants a high school diploma
or a college education, she will have
to figure out for herself how to do it.
- OLD-FASHIONED MOTHER

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I had
dinner at a very nice restaurant. The
food was good, but the service was
lousy.
When we got outside, my wife said,
"I hope you didn’t leave him a tip.” I
said, “I sure did. I left 15 cents. Had I
not left anything, he might have
thought I stupidly forgot. This way he
knows I did not forget, and he also
knows what I thought of the service.”
- DAN B„ SAN FRANCISCO
DEAR DAN: A waiter usually
knows when he has given “lousy”
service. You should have given the
manager a “tip.” Managers appre
ciate knowing how their customers
rate the service.
