Good aim, right equipment needed for turkeys
The wild turkey is one of the most difficult and
challenging game animals in the world to hunt. Hunters
spend years learning the bird’s habits and habitats, how
to hunt him and call him into shotgun range.
Many hunters spare no time
and expense to bring a turkey
into their sights only to fail to
kill the bird cleanly.
There can be different
reasons for this, but a wise
hunter can take steps to
ensure that when a trophy tom
steps into his sights the bird
will fall when the trigger is
pulled.
One of the chief reasons a
turkey is lost is the way the
bird is constructed. The breast
area of a turkey is heavily
muscled, as well as having a good amount of gristle in the
skeleton structure. The feathers that protect the chest
are at their thickest and strongest here and serve to
absorb a considerable amount of the force of a charge of
shot.

DEALING WITH DENTAL ANXIETY
Despite the fact that dental care is far
more comfortable and relaxed than
ever before, and much less painful,/
about one in every 10 people in the
U.S. seems to experience dental anx
iety. Because of it, many of them
avoid dental treatment so long that
their oral health suffers.
In recognition of this anxiety, dentists
are trained to reduce stress and
reduce anxiety by 1) discussing pa
tients' fears with them... 2) pre
arranging for them to signal the den
tist to stop working an any time dur
ing treatment (this allows a felling of
some central over what's taking
place)...3) letting the patients know
what is being done each step of the
way, to eliminate any unappreciated
"surprises"...4) and, where indicated,
using relaxants in conjunction with
traditional pain-killers.

For these reasons, most of the time successful turkey
hunters take heads shots only when a tom shows up. He is
just too difficult to kill cleanly with a body shot. But the
head itself on a tom is not exactly an easy target.
To get an idea of just how difficult it is to make a clean
hit on a gobbler’s head and neck, draw a target about the
size of your fist and wrist on a piece of cardboard, cut the
target out and paint it black and suspend from a tree
limb. For good effect have a partner tie a section of
string to the target and have him move and jerk the
target as you are aiming.
Take a shot at the target and count the pellets that have
struck. With many guns and shotloads the result is
minimal. That is why the hunter who is completely
serious about taking a bird will equip himself with some
specialized gear to accomplish this.
The selection of a turkey gun is a fairly simple matter.
Just use the biggest you can find with the tightest choke.
Many veteran turkey hunters are taking some type of ten
gauge cannon into the woods with them.
The Ithaca Mag 10, Marlin Super Goose 10 and H&R ten
bore single shot are popular with these hunters. They like
the huge amount of shot they throw and the extra tight

Bailey, who was forced to watch
most of the Knights’ first encounter
with Forsyth from the bench because
of early foul trouble, made good on
his first five field goal attempts to
account for all of Johnson’s first
quarter scoring. The Knights carried
a 10-4 lead into the second period.
The offenses for both squads
warmed up in the second stanza and,
propelled by junior Glenn Sutko’s 11-
point effort, the Bulldogs were able to
trim their deficit to 24-22.
But that would be as close as the
Bulldogs would come, as Johnson
held off the Forsyth charge to carry a
30-26 advantage into the intermission.
The Bulldogs’ deficit swayed be
tween four and six points through the
early minutes of the second half, but
the Knights opened up a 44-32 lead
late in the third quarter with an eight
point scoring streak.
Johnson’s 20-of-25 free throw shoot
ing in the final quarter accounted for
the eventual wide victory margin, as
the Knights turned Forsyth’s late
fouling tactics to their own advan
tage.
All five Johnson starters finished in
double figures, led by Bailey, who

patterns these guns can deliver.
Other hunters do not wish to purchase a shotgun
strictly for turkey hunting and will press one of the guns
they presently own into service. This is fine if you follow
a few guidelines.
A good turkey gun, according to most experts I’ve
spoken with on this subject, should be at least a 12 gauge.
I know turkeys are taken with 16 and 20 bore guns, but
this is handicapping yourself and could possibly lead to
wounding and losing a tom, something to avoid at all
costs. Preferably this gun should chamber three-inch
magnum shells. The action you prefer is up to you but
most knowledgable hunters select a pump that will
handle two-and three-quarter inch loads as well as three
inch.
Ideally this gun will have some type of interchangeable
choke system on the barrel that will take full or extra full
chokes. A recoil pad is a nice and appreciated addition in
a short, manageable barrel. Two guns that meet this
criteria perfectly are the Mossberg 500 Turkey Special
and the new Winchester 1300 XTR Turkey Gun. Either of
this pair of scatterguns makes for potent turkey
medicine. When you have selected a gun, give an equal
amount of time to the shell you will be using. Just any old
scored a game-high 24 points. Randy
Chester led Forsyth with 19 points,
while Sutko finished with 18.
“We showed a lack of mental inten
sity and never really got into the
game,” said Fields. “The physical
effort was there but we never got
into the game mentally.
‘ ‘The last game of the year is a hard
game to play, especially when you’re
going against a team you’ve already
beaten. I think we lost some of our
motivation and desire after the win
over North Gwinnett (which evened
the Bulldogs’ record at 10-10). We
didn’t play well against Clarke (last
Wednesday) and we didn’t play well
against Johnson.
‘ ‘Once we got behind and saw that it
wasn’t going to be easy, we seemed to
say, ‘We don’t have to do this.’ The
players knew that a loss wouldn’t
really hurt our position (in the sub
region tournament), so there was no
real incentive to put out the effort to
win,” Fields said.
Ironically, the loss to Johnson set
up another encounter with the
Knights for Forsyth, in the first round
of the Sub-region 8-AAAA West Bas
ketball Tournament on Tuesday at
Berkmar.
Forsyth and Norcross split their
two regular season meetings, with
the Lady Bulldogs claiming a 68-49
decision at home while the Lady Blue
Devils won the rematch by a 48-42
count.

shell of any shot size or powder charge won’t do. Select a
shell with the heaviest amount of shot possible and the
strongest powder charge you can find.
There are other things to look for too. The shot in this
turkey load should preferably be copper plated for
hardness and resistance to deforming. Copper plating
shot hardens it and helps to keep it round so that it will fly
true and hit hard. It is more expensive than regular shot,
but well worth it.
The shell should have some kind of buffer in it also. A
buffer is usually some sort of powder-like substance
produced from plastic that cushions and protects the shot
as it is fired. This buffer does just what the name implies
and prevents the shot in the charge from compacting
against one another and causing pellets to flatten out and
not fly true. Here again this increases the cost of the shell
but is a good investment.
The Federal Premium three-inch magnum shell is a
good example of this type of shell. This shell comes with
two ounces of shot, four drams equivalent powder, and is
buffered and is probably the most powerful 12 gauge
shell one can shoot. A good turkey load as well as great
for long pass shooting at waterfowl.
WRESTLERS From page IB
dealt an opening round loss by Brook
wood’s Massie.
As expected, the area competition,
and thus the route to the state tourna
ment, was much tougher than in 1984,
when the Bulldogs advanced seven
wrestlers to the state competition.
“Last year, there were only five
teams in the region tournament, so
all you had to do was win one match
and you went to state,” Taylor said.
“This year, there were seven
teams, which meant you had to win
two matches to qualify. And the com
petition was tougher this year with
the new teams,” Taylor said, refer
ring to Norcross, Brookwood and
Central Gwinnett.
Berkmar captured the Area 6 team
title, scoring 189% points to outdis
tance second place Norcross, which
finished with 145% points. Brookwood
placed third with 110% points, fol
lowed by Parkview (94%), Central
Gwinnett (86%), South Gwinnett (30)
and Forsyth (27%).
Despite the last place finish, Taylor
noted that the experience of the area
tournament will benefit the eight
Bulldogs who will return next year.
“I know I keep emphasizing how
young we are, but it’s true. We’ve got
eight coming back next year that
wrestled in the area (tournament).
And they’ll be better next year,”
Taylor said.
