Cancer insurance policy limitations
Limitations of cancer insuranct
are easily overlooked. Over 15 million
people have purchased cancer insur
ance. At first it sounds like a good
idea. But a closer look shows that a
major medical policy is often a better
buy

'Typically, dread disease insurers
return 40 cents or less of each pre
mium dollar in the form of benefits.
'Che other 60 cents is used for com
pany profits, sales commission and
administrative expenses. On the
other hand, comprehensive medical
plans generally return at least 55
cents and some asmuch as 95 cents to
consumers.
i Purchasing insurance for any one
disease, or limited purpose, is an
expensive way to insure your health.

stars in college play
While Tonya Odum and Lynne
Ashe, two fo the stars in the upcoming
production of CRIMES OF THE
HEART, produced by The College
Theatre of Gainesville, are very dif
ferent individuals, they actually have
a lot in common.
When the Georgia Mountains Cen
ter Theatre curtain goes up for
CRIMES OF THE HEART, Miss
Odum will be inher first large-scale
role outside of three plays at Dawson
County High School in Dawsonville.
This northeast Georgia area produc
tion ofPulitzer Prize-winning play
wright Beth Henley’s “Southern
Gothic” comedy will be Miss Ashe’s
21st role, including 12 with College
Theatre.
Coincidentally, both actresses
amde their stage debuts as “the girl’
id high school productions of BAL
CONY SCENE.
;Miss Ashe, who earned a bachelor’s
degree in the joint Gainesville Junior
College-Brenau College Theatre Arts
program, was a recipient of the GJC
Foundation Speech and Drama Schol
arship. Miss Odum, a GJC freshman,
recently received the same schol
arship.
It was inevitable that these young
actresses were cast as two of the
dingy MaGrath sisters. Both Miss
Odum, daughter of Gene Odum of
Dawsonville and Kay Gearhart of
Flowery Branch, and Miss Ashe,

medical problems. It makes more
sense to supplement comprehensive
health insurance with a major medi
cal plan. This provides full protection
against catastrophic medical costs
for diseases and injuries of every
kind.
Cancer insurance policies often
have other limitations that are easily
overlooked. Many policies have fixed
dollar limits. For example, a policy
may pay only up to $1,500 for surgery
costs or SI,OOO for radiation therapy,
or it may have fixed payments such
as SSO or SIOO for each day in the
hospital. Others limit total benefits to
a fixed amount such as $5,000 or
SIO,OOO.
Cancer or its treatment may lead to
other physical problems. These other
problems may not be covered by

We’re still looking for the family
connection’” said Miss Odum, who is
“flattered to be on this set (for
CRIMES OF THE HEART) and with
these people (the cast).”
But “flattered” wasn’t her first
feeling about the theatre and acting
it was confusion, explained Miss
Odum, who made frequent visits to
the College Theatre director Ed Ca
bell, before making a decision. “I told
Lynne, ‘I going to be a doctor, lawyer
or actress,” Miss Odum said, recal
ling that she also considered a career
as a professional basketball player.
Miss Odum used some of that inci
siveness in developing her portrayal
of Babe, the youngest MaGrath sis
ter. “Babe’s comical, like me, and
country, like me, and hyper,” she
laughed.
Although playing a woman who
shoots her husband because she
didn’t like his looks is “a hard role”
for Miss Odum, CRIMES OF THE
HEART director Chris Curran, em
phasized, “It’s a great role for her,
and she’s growing inot it with every
rehearsal.”
Miss Ashe returns to the mainstage
for the first time since 1983 to portray
Lenny, the oldest MaGrath sister.
“The role is like me,” said Miss

Most cancer policies cover ex

treated on an out-patient basis.
Cancer patients often have large

condemned herself to spinsterhood
because she believes no man wants a
wife with a “shrunken ovary” and
feels sorry for herself about that
decision. “I get into these martyr
syndromes: a lot of Southerners do.”
“The character is harder, maybe
because she’s 30, and being 30 is
harder on most women,” said Miss
Ashe, who has played characters
ranging from 14 to 86 years old.
The trio of sisters, which also in

depend on men and the way men
perceive them,” she said, adding,
“they’re liberated to a certain extent
but only will admit to each other that
they need a man.”
CRIMES OF THE HEART is a play
about Southern women written by a

than a celebration of women, it’s a
celebration of the Southern spirit.”

and rehabilitation costs.
Many policies promise to increase
benefits after a patient has been in
the hospital for 90 consecutive days.
However, 99 percent of cancer pa
tients spend less that 60 days in the
hospital, with an average stay of 16
days. As a result, the. promise of
extended benefits is of no value to
most people.
Cancer diagnosed before a person
applies for a policy is not covered
under cancer insurance policies.
Also, many policies require a waiting
period of 30 days up to several months
before the policyholder is covered.
Older citizens who have questions
about cancer insurance, other dread
disease policies, or other health in
surance may call the toll-free insur
ance hotline number BOO/423-8000.
