out of gas in the match against But
ler. But he got a good night’s sleep
Friday and he felt better on Saturday.
There was an obvious difference in
the way he looked.
“But I think the biggest thing was
that he realized that each time he
stepped out on the mat, it could be his
last time. So he really put everything
into it. He didn't have any reason to
hold back.
“When the whistle blew, he was
gone. He attacked them eyes on
chin and feet moving,” Taylor said,
likening Slaton’s wrestling assault to
his linebacking days for Forsyth’s
football Bulldogs.
The matchup of Slaton and Rivas in
the consolation finals added credence
to Area Vi’s reputation as one of the
state’s strongest. Of the top four
finishers in the 167-lb. class, three
came from Area VI. And Parkview’s

tling (Rivas) again because I had
beaten him four times. It’s hard to
keep beating a good wrestler, and I
knew he was going to be going all out
because he didn’t have anything to
lose,” Slaton said of his opponent in
the consolation finals.
“But he’s just a junior he’s going
to be back next year. This was going
to be my last match, and I wasn’t
going to lose it,” Slaton said.
Rivas scored a takedown early and
muzzled Slaton’s aggressiveness for
most of the first round, which was
interrupted by an injury break as
Slaton suffered a bloody nose.
Rivas opened his advantage to 4-1
with a near fall early in the second
period. But faced with the potential
reality of a career ending defeat,
Slaton’s competitive fire surfaced to
unleash an onslaught that had to
leave Rivas wondering what had hit
him.

Jeffery, who had advanced to the
semi-finals, gave all four of the area’s
state qualifying wrestlers a top six
finish.
Overall, Area VI did indeed prove
to be the class of the state tourna
ment, placing three squads in the top
seven of the team competition. Pre
tournament favorite Berkmar (120.5
points) was upset by Wheeler (149.5
points) and relegated to a second
place finish, while Norcross (82.5 )
placed fifth and Central Gwinnett
(52) finished seventh.
Other top finishers included 1984
champion Redan (third, 107.5), Tow
ers (fourth, 91.5), Hardaway and
LaGrange (tied for sixth, 59), Fayett
County (ninth, 46.5) and Valdosta
(tenth, 45.4).
Slaton accounted for all 22 of For
syth’s team points, which placed the

An escape and a takedown quickly
knotted the score at 4-4 and Slaton
then surged onto a 14-6 decision on the
strength of four near falls in the
match’s final 2:15.
And Slaton revelled in the light of
the comeback march that had taken
some of the sting out of his failure to
attain his dream of a state title.
“I really wanted to win it this
year,” said Slaton, who had suffered
defeats at the hands of the eventual
state runner-up in each of the pre
vious two tournaments. Specifically,
Slaton wanted one more shot at Ro
mine, the Berkmar champion who
had handed Slaton his only two losses
before the state tournament.
But his rematch with Romine never
materialized, and the Berkmar wres
tler defended his crown without ever
being seriously threatened, capturing

“We feel that with eight starters
returning on defense, we’ll be in
pretty good shape there. But it’s
definitely a rebuilding year as far as
the offense goes, especially at the
skill positions.

Forsyth heavyweight Mitchell El
zey, who was defeated by eventual
champion Jimmy Lolly, of Lowndes
County, on Friday, also gained a
berth in the consolation round. But
the senior fell victim to a third period
pin by Stone Mountain’s Bobby Tay
lor in the initial round of the wres
tlebacks.
Taylor nevertheless commended
Elzey, who gained the state tourna
ment in his first year of wrestling
competition.
“It’s hard for a first year wrestler
to do anything in the state tourna
ment, because everyone there is good
and most have been wrestling for
quite a while. All the mediocre wres
tlers have been weeded out by that
point, so there aren’t any easy
matches. “It was quite an accom
plishment for him just to make it
there,” Taylor said.
“I’m glad I got third though. It feels
good to go out knowing you won your
last match,” Slaton said of the conso
lation finals victory that raised his
season record to 29-3 and his career
record to 63-15. “And it feels good to
be the first one from Forsyth to ever
place (in the state wrestling competi
tion). Wrestling’s not that big a sport
around here yet, but maybe this will
help bring it up.
“I don’t think it’s really hit me yet.
It doesn’t seem like it’s over.
“It’s funny. In the middle of the
season, you get to a point where
you’ve done the same thing over and
over for so long that it just gets old
and you’re tired of it all. But now that
it’s over, it seems like it went by so
fast. I wish I had another year,”
Slaton said.
One thing’s sure. Forsyth’s oppo
nents are glad they won’t have to face
Slaton for another season.
