Buy best seed before planting
Buy good seed. Better yet, buy the
best seed that you can get. There is no
gardening problem worse than find
ing out that your tomatoes are of the
yellow plum, canning type when you
thought they wereluscious beef
steaks that cover a sandwich with one
slice.
Garden supply stores and seed cat
alogs are some of the places to buy
seed. Before you decide to get garden
seed, there are several things that
you should (or must) do.
1( Check with your local Extension
office. We have
recommended varieties for our
area.
2) Check with your neighbors who
garden successfully. They will let you

LONG-DISTANCE SHOPPING
GUIDE
By: Carol A. White
County Extension Agent
If you haven’t already been ap
proached by a sales representative
selling long distance service, you can
expect to soon. There are more than a
dozen different long distance carriers
fighting for your long-distance ac
count.
Consumers are, for the first time,
having to make a decision about
which long-distance company to use.
The following guide may help in mak
ing the choice.
The first step is to look at a recent
typical longdistance bill. Make a list
of regular calls that you make
(friends, relatives, business contact)
and the average cost. Note their
location and area codes, how long
each call lasts, and the time of day.
Now you can compare carriers and
find one that matches your habits at
the lowest cost.
In your comparison find out the
answers to the following questions
about each company:
1) Fixed charges
Is there a charge for:
start-up fee?
monthly service?
minimum usage requirement?
2) Savings:
Will you be charged by whole
minute or by
6-second intervals?
customer service (operator as
sistance, toll-free
numbers, 24-hour service)?
Will you be charged for un
answered calls you
dial, or only upon pick-up or after a
buffer period?
3) Service:
What is the company’s policy on;
billing for calls made across
time zones?

3) If you order seed from a catalog,
it will take from two to four weeks for
it to arrive. Most of the seed compa
nies are north and we in the South
need to get seed orders in early to
assure delivery on time.
4) Check with your local garden
dealers. They have sold seed for a
number of years and will be glad to
give advice.

5) Ordering from a seed catalog
will give you a wider selection of
varieties.
6) Decide what you want to grow
from seed. It might be easier to buy
transplants than to grow five or six
plants of eggplant etc.
7) When you read the variety de
scription on the seed packet or in th.e
catalog, look for the particular qual
ities that interest you. Be sure to
order slicing cucumbers to eat and
pickling for making dills. Some to
mato varieties are better cucumbers
canners while others are for fresh
eating. And there is always the con
troversy over crook-neck and
straight-neck yellow squash.

This means that these varieties per

9) There may be a VFN code after
the name of the variety. The V means
that the plant carries a degree of
verticillium wilt resistance. The F
means that it carries a certain degree
of fusarium wil resistance. The N is
extremely important. It means that
the plant carries a degree of nemato

VFN variety would be very helpful to

the seed is packed for the current
