BOTTLE FEEDING AND CAVITIES
It's never too soon to begin a program of
regular dental care. In the past, many
parents paid little or no attention to so
called "baby teeth"--figuring that these
were expendable and nature would take
care of producing a healthy set of adult
teeth. But, consider this example: When
a baby or todler goes to sleep with a bot
tle of milk or sugar-coating fruit juices,
already-erupted teeth are bathed in a
sugar-acid solution. Since salivas
mouth-cleaning action slows down while
a child sleeps, this "pacifier"' bottle
creates an ideal climate for decay
bacteria. And because the enamel of
baby teeth is thiner than that of perma
nent teeth, and the bacteria growth rate
increases enormously, this combination
can cause widespread decay in all teeth.
If a baby absolutely insists on going to
sleep with a bottle, be sure it's removed
once the child settles down.
