Ten Forsyth County High School
students recently competed with
more than 150 other students from the
Atlanta area in the District Distribu
tive Education Clubs of America

the competitive event was to enhance
learning gained in the students mar
keting and distributive education
classes and from their part-time jobs.
DECA students’ proficiency in sell
ing, management, advertising, math,
marketing and customer relations
were evaluated by objective tests and
role playing during the competition.
Rick Jackson, who assisted with the
competition, commented that he was

Give your dog some training
By Judy Haywood
Here come the new obedience class
students barking, whining, jump
ing, unruley dogs and their owners
one dragging the other in on a leash.
At first there is doubt that anything
can be done with this rowdy crowd,
but two short hours later, im
provement is already obvious.

Dog owners must learn to deal with
the natural instincts of their partic
ular breed of dog, establish a mu
tually enjoyable relationship as
“Master” and communicate desires
respectfully. The essential equipment
consists of a personally-sized training
collar with a long comfortable leash
that must be used properly.
Patience, persistence and praise
are the key words in training obedi
ence. A dog is never allowed to dis
obey a command so when he does
obey, he should always receive
praise.
For instance, when you command
your dog to “sit”, you physically tuck
his back legs under him and sit him

down. Then you can exhibit lavish
praise, saying “Good sit!” and make
him feel he is wonderful for obeying
you. He will learn the command with
consistent repitition and soon will
become eager to obey.
While the main idea of dog obedi
ence class is to train the dog, it is
equally important to train the owner.
Dudley Dowrong was an obedience
trained sheepdog who was nearly
euthanised because his owners did
not know how to handle him. Fortuna
tely, he was rescued by a person who
had learned obedience training.
Often a destructive, uncontrollable,
aggravating dog is beaten (some
times even to death) by a frustrated
owner who loses his temper and is
sorry later.
Owning a dog is an investment of
time, money and love. If a behavior
problem arises, please take that ex
tra step and learn to correct it before

you have to get rid of your pet.
Here are a few tips to make life a
little easier:
• Does your dog constantly try to
get in the door when you don’t want
him in? Try a water gun. A harmless
yet unpleasant squirt quickly discour
ages him.
• Does he like to chew furniture?
There is a product available at pet
stores that tastes like bitter apples
that can be applied to his favorite
spots. Try red pepper on your plants.
• Does your puppy or dog like to
bite you? Bite him back! That’s right,
bite him on the top of his muzzle. This
is where mother dogs bite their pups
to correct them and it will work for an
owner as well.
For more information about obedi
ence training, contact you local pet
stores or kennels.
