Fire damages
Harvey's home
Fire and smoke caused heavy dam
age Sunday evening to the home of
Jim Harvey, a former Forsyth
County investigator who ran for sher
iff during the last general election.
Forsyth County Fire Chief Jake
Moore said firemen were called to the
home about 9 p.m. Sunday evening. A
large portion of the home was de
stroyed, he said.
Moore added that the state fire
marshal was investigating to deter
mine the cause of the blaze.
Sale of U.S. Savings Bonds
has increased in Forsyth
Sales of Series EE United States
Savings Bonds in Forsyth County
totaled $91,968 during 1984, Roy P.
Otwell, Sr. said this week. Otwell
serves as Forsyth County Volunteer
Savings Bond chairman.
The 1984 sales have increased sub
stantially over the same period of a
year ago, Otwell said. Statewide,
bond sales totaled $83,202,331 for the
period.
National sales of savings bonds
during 1984 amounted to $4 billion, a 4
percent increase over 1983. Cur
rently, $74.51 billion worth of savings
bonds are being held by the public.
Canton couple fishes,
car gets burglarized
More than SBOO worth of clothing
and camera equipment was taken
from a Canton couple Friday, Feb. 22,
between 1 and 3 p.m. as they were on
their way home from a week-long trip
and decided to fish before returning
to Canton.
According to reports from the For
syth County Sheriff’s Department,
Bern and L. Hubbard of Canton route
2, left an unlocked car at Beaver Ruin
Cemetery and walked down to the
lake to go fishing.
On returning to their vehicle, they
discovered that their movie camera
and viewer, valued at approximately
$350, and a garment bag, valued at
SSO and containing $244 worth of
men’s clothing and $194 worth of
women’s clothing had been taken.

were taken from the residence of

taken from residence

9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.

According to the report from the
Forsyth County Sheriff’s Depart
ment, the entry was made into the
garage which is adjacent to Up
church’s home, through an open ga
rage door.
On Monday, Feb. 11, between 8 and
8:30 p.m., Ruell Bettis of Cumming
route 4 went to the Hardware and
Builders Supply store located on
Highway 9 South and saw two un

Cumming youth
faces charges
A 17-year-old Cumming youth was
arrested Friday, Feb. 22, as a result
of an observant citizen who relayed
information to the Forsyth County
Sheriff’s Department.
Forsyth County authorities ar
rested James Mitchell Gayton with
two counts of burglary and entering
an automobile. Gayton was released
under bond and some of the property
taken has been recovered, said For
syth County Sheriff Wesley Walra
ven.
Since November 1,1982, new Series
EE Savings Bonds held five years or
longer earn 85 percent of the average
return on five-year treasury market
able securities during the holding
period. There is a minimum guar
anteed return of 7.5 percent for bonds
held at least five years. Most older
Series E and EE Bonds are also
eligible for the market-based rate.
The rate for the current six-month
market-based period is 10.94 percent.
“With market-based interest,” Ot
well said, “savings bond buyers are
able to benefit from increases in
market interest.”

Reports state that the entry was
made through the back door of the
residence sometime between 7 a.m.
and 9:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.
Taken was a model 15 S & W, 270
bolt action blond stock with armsport

gauge double barrel Stevens blond
stock shotgun, $150; a single shot, .410

ported missing from the residence of

According to the reports, the
mower was taken from under a shed
sometime between Feb. 1 and Feb.

Bettis, according to the report from
the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Depart
ment, blocked one of the vehicles and
asked the driver why and what he
was doing in the parking lot. The
driver said that he was having car
trouble. Bettis stated that he and his
son left the lot around 9 p.m. but felt
uncomfortable about the vehicles and
waited in a nearby parking lot.
About 15 minutes later, the same
two vehicles drove into the parking
lot.
Bettis later reported the theft of a
Snapper lawnmower valued at ap
proximately $l,lOO.
Water off for
some in city
Forsyth County residents served by
the Cumming Water System may
have noticed a decrease in water
pressure Sunday, or a loss of water
altogether.
The problem resulted from a break
in a 12-inch water main on Georgia 20
west, near two of the city’s three
water storage tanks. The incident
occurred around 4 p.m. Sunday.
City Clerk Estlene Stanford said
water pressure was reduced to allow
for repairs to the line.
Carroll Buice, city water supervi
sor, said water service was restored
about 7% hours after the break oc
curred.
Forsyth couple
charged after search
The search of a Forsyth County
couples residence resulted in the sei
zure of approximately three pounds
of suspected marijuana and several
guns.
According to Forsyth County Sher
iff Wesley Walraven, Henry Edward
Midura, 34 and his wife Julie Diane
Midura, 26 were both charged with
possession of suspected marijuana
with intent to distribute following a
search held at their residence, lo
cated off Shady Grove Road, on Feb.
19. Midura also was charged with
possession of firearms by a convicted
felon.
The investigation is continuing by
Forsyth County Sheriff’s authorities
and the Georgia Bureau of Investiga
tion.
