Learn to use patterns wisely
Pattern catalogs are a wealth of
information. Use them wisely and
learn all you possibly can.
The first few pages are photo
graphs of the latest fashion trends as
that pattern company sees them.
Note the silhouettes and hemlines as
well as colors, patterns and textures
of fabrics used. Also, study the acces
sories that complete the fashion
looks.
The line drawings for each pattern
show styling details. Information not
visible from the photographs and
drawings is also given. Completeness
will vary with pattern brands. Some
give clues to the amount of ease and
thus, how the garment fits. At least
one pattern company explains their
fit terms in the back of the catalog.
Check the chart provided with each
pattern for lower edge widths of
skirts and pants plus finished lengths
of dresses, jackets and coats. Yard
age requirements are usually in the
catalog and always on the pattern
envelope. This includes interfacings,
linings and special trims. Reliable
suggestions for suitable fabrics are
included too.

A numerical index of patterns is
located in the back of every compa
ny’s pattern book. If you know a
pattern number, you can locate it in
the book. Some companies have a
classified index for special sizes or
pattern types.
Often the back of a catalog has a
partial listing of fabrics and accesso
ries used in the fashions photo
graphed. Company names and
addresses are given to aid you in the
location of retail outlets.
Conversion charts for yards to me
ters are also located in the back of
pattern books. Fabric conversion
charts are usually included. How
ever, unusual designs and large pat
tern pieces may make such charts
useless.

students used different fund-raising
projects to collect money for this

According to Brooks, with the
measurements for pattern size are
given. Charts of body measurements
with pattern size aid in the selection

Each tabbed section of a catalog is
a grouping of similar garments such

money from the Jazzerthon, the funds
to be sent will total more than $1,500.
“I just think it’s great,” he said to
one of the instructors. “I just didn’t
know you were going to raise this
much money.”
Ms. Muller said that about 30 par
ticipants stayed during the Jazzer
thon for the entire four hours.
However, it was Hilda Robbins, a
student of Ms. Muller’s for three
years, who received the free jazzer
cise instruction for a year.
“Bonnie Trau, who thought up the
project, brought in the largest single
amount of pledges,” said Ms. Muller.
And though 30 participants stayed for
the entire four hours, it was Hilda
Robbins, a member of Ms. Muller’s
class for three years, who received
the free jazzercise instruction for an
entire year.
Ms. Muller said participants came
from as far as Dahlonega, Buford and
Roswell to join in the activities.
Ms. Muller and other instructors
wanted to extend their appreciation
to all who had a hand in the success of
the jazzerthon and especially to the
