SOFTBALL continued from page 2B
offense and defense in what Tallant
described as, “a couple of fairly well
played games,” in posting the twin
shutouts of the Lady Knights of John
son.
Forsyth turned no double plays hit
nor any home runs but combined
steady hitting and defense to defeat
Johnson.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to
an early 9-0 lead in the first game, by
scoring 2 runs in the first and 7 in the
second. Forsyth added 2 more runs in
the fifth to increase the lead to the
final 11-0 margin.
Seven players drove in runs to pace
the offense, which was characterized
by having three Lady Bulldogs tied
for the RBI lead with 2 each.
Diggle, wood and Leah Henderson
all drove in 2 runs each.
ROUT continued from page 2B
the PAT and the score stood at the
final 40-0 margin.
During the second half, the Bull
dogs played with several players out
of position. In runaway games it is
usual custom for coaches to put in
substitutes , but with only 16 players
on the entire squad, the position shifts
were as close as the Bulldogs could
come.
Even with players in new positions,
the Bulldogs offense continued to
move the ball and the defense contin
ued to stop the Blue Devils.

SOUTH COAL MTN.,U.S. 19, N.
Waters picked up the win to raise
her record to 12-0.
In the second game, the Lady Bull
dogs again took the lead in the first
inning, scoring 3 runs. They added 4
runs to that total in the third inning
and 8 more in the fifth.
Christi Woodham and Bagley led
the offense with 3 hits and 2 RBIs
each.
Betsy Henderson was the winning
pitcher. Her record for the year is 2-0.
The wins this past week left the
Lady Bulldogs with a 8-0 record in
region 8-AAAA, setting up a battle for
first place and the top seeding for the
region tournament, with Parkview
next Tuesday at Parkview. The Lady
Panthers are also currently 8-0 in the
region and 14-4 overall.
With time running out, the Bulldogs
had a touchdown called back because
of a clipping violation, leaving the
score at the 40-0 .
While he was pleased with the re
sults, Forsyth assistant coach James
Smith said he felt badly for the River
side team “I’ve been on the other side
of these kind, too.”
Yarborough explained the reasons
for the number of points the Bulldogs
were able to amass. “They just bunch
up the middle and you can run to the
outside.” he said.

ROUNDUP continued from page 2B
however, North again added to its
lead when Jason Watson scored on a
22-yard run.
With 6:14 left the Bullpups came
flying down the field to score on a 60
yard drive. The try for a two point
conversion failed, and the score stood
at 21-6.
Gravitt quelled the Otwell uprising
on the ensuing kickoff, as he scored
on an 80-yard return. His try for a
PAT failed and the score was 27-6.
Watson raised the margin up to its
final 33-6, with a 2-yard touchdown
run.
Otwell gained a measure of re
venge later in the 9th grade contest,
as the Bullpups shut out the Wildcats
14-0.
The game was a defensive struggle
from start to finish, with the Otwell
defense proving to be the stronger.
It was a defensive play that set up
Otwell’s first score.
The Bullpups deflected a Wildcat
punt in the first quarter and took
possession of the ball at the North 8
yard line. Two plays later Steve Sla
ton scored on a one yard plunge to
give Otwell a 6-0 lead. The try for a
teo-point conversion failed, leaving
the score at 6-0 where it stayed for the
remainder of the half.

In the beginning of the second half,
the Bullpups marched methodically
on a 75-yard drive to increase their
lead to 13-0. David Markey scored the
touchdown on a short run up the
middle. Derrick Matheson caught the
pass for a two-point conversion mak
ing the score the final 14-0.
North’s offense moved well, but
when it got close to the end zone the
physically larger Bullpups were able
to bunch up the plays and stave off
the scoring threats.
