Chamber plans to ask city officials for money
By Norman Baggs
Editor " -
Directors of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of
pjmmerce voted Thursday to bill the city of Cumming
for more than $1,300 they feel the city owes the Chamber.
Chamber officials say the city has obligated itself to a
subsidy of S6BB per quarter, but has failed to make a
paymet to the Chamber since February.
As of Oct. 1, the amount owed will increase to $2,064,
according a Chamber spokesman.
The city’s position on the money is different from that
of the Chamber’s directors, however.

According to City Manager Gerald Blackburn, the city
council decided early in the year not to continue financial
support of the Chamber because a number of “questions
and concerns” expressed by city officials were not
addressed by the Chamber.
Blackburn indicated that city officials are still not
satisfied with the manner in which they have been
treated by the Chamber of Commerce, and are specif
ically concerned that Chamber efforts to bring new
industries and jobs into the county have ignored the
downtown Cumming area.
The city manager said he did not feel the city council
would choose to pay a bill if one is submitted by the
struction of a plant in Forsyth
County.
Plans for the building include 40,000
square feet of space, with 5,000
square feet devoted to office uses.
Construction is expected to begin
early next year.

Gunnigle says Pansy Ellen designs

The firm is involved in distribution

Chamber of Commerce.
Blackburn also said the subsidy provided to the Cham
ber began as a temporary payment when the Chamber
was in need of money, but eventually came to be
“expected” from the city government.
He said the money is not included in the annual city
budget, and is paid from discretionary funds.
Chamber officials, meanwhile, contend that the city
has made a firm commitment to financial backing of the
organization, and have said they will approach the city
government with a request for money they feel is owed
the Chamber.
The rift between the city and the Chamber became
and light manufacturing.
Initial employment for the firm will
be 60 people, increasing to 75 people
in two years. When all of its contract
work is taken into account, Pansy
Ellen employs about 250 people, Gun

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1»8S-
obvious in January, when city officials became miffed
over their treatment in planning of the Chamber’s annual
meeting.
The city paid the Chamber S6BB in February to cover
the subsidy for the first quarter of the year, but has
declined any additional payments this year.
Attempts by Chamber officials to convince the city to
continue its payments to the Chamber have proven
unsuccessful.
In their meeting Thursday, the Chamber officials set
no deadline for discussions with the city, nor did they
indicate what action if any could be taken if the city
refused to comply with a request for additional money.
