place on a different field and a differ
ent day. It was a field without cleat
markings in the sod and instead
showed the tramplings of the thou
sands of soft-sole band shoes which
marched across the grass on Satur
day with blaring horns and twirling
flags.
The high school band may not keep
no registration is required.
It will be packed with practical
ways for establishing an equitable
discipline structure parents can live
with and techniques to help children
grow in increased self discipline,
independent problem solving skills
and responsibility.
Some of the topics include: Positive

starts; stress management keep-

band played on
statistics on its performance or tally
a score at the end of a contest, but the
competition is just as fierce and the
outcome just as important.
The 148-member band competed in
the first of several marching compe
titions Saturday at the “Superbowl
Sound III” in Carrollton.
There teenagers performed the
half-time show they’ve been perfect
ing since August. A show the home
crowd has seen but once this year.
It starts off with a fast Spanish tune
called “Fiero” then the 12-member
drum section beats out the rhythm of
“YYZ” by Rush.
Girls in the auxiliary units have a
chance to shine during the next num
ber, “I Go To Rio,” by Peter Allen.
The closing song is “We Are the
Reason,” by Amy Grant.
If a Friday night performance is a
chance to show off to family and
friends and pep up fans for the second
half of the game, then competitions
like Saturday’s is for all the marbles
for every step counts and there’s
no excuse for missing notes or forget
ting when to march and where.
The drill is a little harder this year
compared with previous falls. The
opener contains free-form movement
and there are no straight lines to
follow along the chalked football
field.
Like the football team, the band is
in a rebuilding year. They are young,
mostly tenth graders, but very hard
workers, says band director Pat Gal
lagher, who is returning for his fourth
year.
He lost 30 seniors to graduation last
year, and that hurts. Six graduated
from the drum section. But, the good
news is that this year’s performers
will be around for a while. There are
ing your cool without putting your
feelings on ice; power struggles
what they are and how to avoid them,
self esteem, chores, fighting and
meals, to name a few.
Mrs. Coloroso will also be speaking
to all teachers in the Forsyth County
School system on that Monday during
the teacher in-service day.
The comprehensive seminar fo
cuses on proven stategies for teach
ing behavior skills to prevent
discipline problems in the classroom,
deal effectively with those that do
occur and for effectively working
with troubled and disruptive stu
dents.
Mrs. Colorso is well-known for
sharing strategies that are practical,
usable and realistic.

Forsyth County competes in a Class
A horn line which includes bands with
50 or fewer horn-playing members.
The “Flash of Crimson” has 48 horns.
This is a tough class to be in be
cause there are usually nine or 10
other bands competing for the top
three trophies says Gallagher.
In order to bring home a trophy,
Forsyth must present a show void of
mistakes. This takes practice lots
of it.

The band also continues to polish

For the most part, the home crowd
will see the same half-time show each
week with little variation. And that’s
because the band must remain pol

vals throughout the fall.

“We hope to change some during
the season,” said Gallagher, “but it’s
sort of a Catch 22, either we do well in
competition or we can change every
week.”
The band is under the field direc
tion of drum majors Greg Phillips, a
senior and Teresa EdgiU, a junior.
The drill team captain is Stacey
Crispens, a senior and the flag corp
captain is Lisa Conner, also a senior.
Ruthie Dalton, a ninth grader who
has been twirling for a number of
years with the band, is captain of the
five majorettes.
