John Gravitt is Merit semi-finalist

County High School, has been se
lected as a semi-finalist in the Merit
Program of the National Merit Schol
arship Corporation.

Kim Cook, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Lamar Cook of Caney Creek
Road in Cumming, recently took
top honors in the Hee Haw Inter
national Clogging Competition
held in Nashville, Tenn. She won
first place out of the 109 contes
tants in the 7-9 age division. Kim
clogged her way to the 10 fi
nalists of all ages for the Grand
Champion competition. She is
under the instruction of Joann
Richards of the Strawberry
Patch Cloggers.
Veterans are encouraged to file records
Approximately 800 Georgians are
discharged from the military each
month, and Georgia Commissioner of
Veterans Affairs Pete Wheeler urges
them to have their discharge papers
recorded at their county courthouse
as soon as possible.

PSAT/NMSQT test scores, a scholas
tic aptitude test taken the junior year
in high school. Statewide, only 350
students are selected for this honor
Miss Gold R ush pageant planned
The North Georgia College Student
Council for Exceptional Children is
sponsoring the third annual “Miss
Gold Rush” Pageant.
The Student Council for Excep
tional Children is a national profes
sional organization for college
students preparing to teach children
with physical, mental, social and/or
emotional handicaps.
The proceeds from the Miss Gold
Rush Pageant will be used to help
handicapped children through pro
jects with which the SCEC assists,
including Special Olympics, aiding
special education classes in Lumpkin
and surrounding counties, and con-

partment of Continuing Education is
offering five classes in Leisure Time
Activities this fall.
Talents and imagination will really
come in handy for those who might be
interested in attending any of these
classes.
For instance, Tom Landreth, one of
the top painting experts in the area,
will be teaching “Watercolor Paint
ing” on Tuesdays, through Oct. 29
from 7 until 9 p.m. Cost is $35.

picked throughout the nation.
From the 15,000 students only 13,-
500, or 90 percent, are expected to
become finalist and named Merit
Scholars. Students should be notified
of this honor by February of 1986.
Also, 5,800 awards valued at s2l
million will be offered to students in
ducting a Fun Fair tor handicapped
children.
There will be four age divisions in
the pageant: Tiny Miss Gold Rush,
ages 3-6 (short dresses only); Little
Miss Gold Rush, ages 7-10 (short
dresses only); Junior Miss Gold
Rush, ages 11-14 (long dresses only);
Miss Gold Rush, ages 15-18 (long
dresses only).
The contest will be held at the
North Georgia College Auditorium
Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
Girls interested in competing in the
contest have until Oct. 7 to enter.
Entry fee is $25. Girls must attend the
sions on “Creative Writing.” The
class will meet from 7:30 until 9 p.m.
and the fee is S3O.
“Lap Quilting” has become the
most popular and easiest method to
create your own family heirloom.
Ruth Waters, one of Hall County’s
finest quilters, will teach this method
on Wednesdays through Nov. 15 from
9:30-11:30 a.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. for $25.
You could say it with flowers in
Saralene Brooks’ class on “Floral
Design.” The class covers the me
chanics used in flower arranging
including work with fresh and silk
flowers. These sessions will be on
Tuesday and Thursday through Oct.

Georgia Tech after graduation. He is
active in the Beta Club, the Y-Club
and also attends Antioch Baptist
Church.

endeavors, try the ancient art of
penmanship in a “Calligraphy” class
taught by Bonnie Martin, This class
in beautiful writing will cover the
basic strokes in script for lettering
posters, signs, personal cards, invita
tions, name tags, etc. The class starts
Oct. 8 and continu through Nov. 5
from 7:30 until 9 p.m. and the cost is
$25.
