good execution by the offense netted
the Bulldogs a 10-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs broke the scoring ice
with 9:01 to go in the secong quarter
when running back Richard Ingram
scored from five yards out to give
Forsyth a 6-0 lead. Freddy Yarbo
rough kicked the extra point to make
the score 7-0.
The touchdown was made possible
on a Lumpkin turnover
Lumpkin took a Forsyth punt and
began on offense at its own 9-yard
line. On second down and 9 yards to
go for a first down, running back
Randy Jackson was stripped of the
ball and Bulldog free safety Chris
Mitchell recovered the loose ball on
the Lumpkin 14 yard line.
Ingram got the call on each play of
the scoring drive gaining 8 and 3
yards respectively on the first two
downs. The touchdown scamper
came on third and 1, when Ingram
jumped over the top of the pile which
formed at the line. He bounced off the
pile an spun free to continue
unscathed into the end zone.

Minutes later a turnover again pre
sented the Bulldogs with an opportu
nity to score from close in.
Lumpkin had begun a drive at its
own 33 yard line and advanced to the
48 on first down. On the second play,
however, quarterback Jason Aber
crombie fumbled and the ball was
recovered by Bulldog lineman Duane
Shook of the 38 yard line.
The Bulldog offense again went to
work. Behind good blocking Kelly
Whitmire took the drive’s first play to
the left for 11 yards. Robby Payne
followed with 10 more, before the
drive began to bog down..
Larry Jenkins was thrown for a 7
yard loss on the next play and a third
and 14 play netted just 2 yards. Yar
boroug then came in on fourth down
and connected on a 25-yard field goal
to extend the Bulldog lead to 10-0
where it stayed until the second half.
Jackson said that at halftime the
offensive game plan for the second
half was discussed, and that it was
decided the goal of the offense should
part of both teams took over to leave
the score at that mark.
Waters was again the winning

be to go out and mount a sustained
scoring drive. The offensive players
took the goal to heart as they
mounted that sustianed drive Jack
osn spoke of.
On the Bulldogs’ second possession
of the second half, the offense started
on its own 48 and drove down the field
to score.
Two personal fouls against Lump
kin helped the drive considerably, but
Payne covered the last four yards to
paydirt, making the score 16-0. Again
Yarborough’s leg was true, and the
Bulldog lead stood at 17-0, with 7:51
left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs were on the
scoreboard again shortly, after
Lumpkin again was stripped of the
ball.
Running back Joey Alfred of Lump
kin fumbled and the miscue was
recovered by Bulldogs defensive end
Jenkins at the Indians’ 35.
Freddy Yarborough in relief of
Payne, who had turned an ankle
directed the Bulldog offense on the
drive. It took only three plays for the
pitcher. Wood’s RBI inthe first was
the game winner.
The games had been originally
scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, but
heavy, lingering rains on Tuesday
and Wednesday pushed the meeting
back to Thursday.
Despite the Rain, the grass in field
was in good condition, making a
further delay unessesary.
TANNER
First, the plan calls for
freshaman eligibility to be taken
away. Today the most heavily
recruited players are those that
are most skilled and therefore
most likely to have an immediate
impact on a college team. Their
value becomes something akin to
a first round draft choice in the
NFL.
By taking away freshman
eligibility, there would be less of
an urgency to sign a player,
because he would not be able to
contirbute to the upcoming
season, anyway. The current
thinking is that the recruiting
process goes after immediate
need. With the immedia the
benefit taken away, so is much of
the temptation to cheat.
The second proposal of great
value is the one which calls for
athletes to receive guaranteed
scholarships, that the recruit
would get to keep irregarless of
poor thletic performance or a
career ending injury.
This, the magazine contends
would keep coaches from taking
away scholarships at the end of a
season and thus have more to
recruit with.
It seems logical. If a coach can’t
have extra scholarships by getting
rid of marginal players he has
fewer chances to cheat, or have
boosters cheat to get a player.
There are other good points to
Sports Illustrated’s plan, but they
are more to make the sport
“amateur” as it is supposed to be.
There are some big problems
with major colege athletics. Dirty
recruiting is just one of the more
common misdeeds. The use of
steroids and theAr being made
available to athletes by coaches is
another.
To put college athletics back
into its proper prospective, the
NCAA must work to implement

Yarborough covered the last 24
yards on a run around the right

extra point to make the score 24-0 and
close out the Bulldog scoring.
A pair of time consuming drives
and the continued fine effort by the
Forsyth defense, saved the lead, ex
cept for a meaningless touchdown
scored against the Bulldog reserves
with :45 left in the game, making the
score 24-6.
Whitmire and Ingram shared the
bulk of the rushing load for the Bull
dogs and finished with 55 and 48 yards
respectively.
While he was savoring the victory,
Jackson was already thinking about
next week’s game with Murray
County at Forsyth stadium.
“We needed this win to give us

Jackson said, “Murray County will

Weight training
is helpful
for children
-a lahar I
Let’s start by setting the record
straight. If your child participates in
athletics, he or she should train with
weights.
Now, let me straighten the record
even more. Your child should train
with weights, but only if he or she has
reached the proper level of maturity.
With the research that has been
recently completed, very few
knowledgable parents or coaches
would deny that weight training is
one of the most vital aspects of any
sports program. But, as in all things,
there is a right time and a wrong time
to start.
Children, as a general rule, should
not begin training with weights until
they have begun to develop some of
the secondary sex characteristics.
The secondary sex characteristics
are pubic hair, hair under the arms,
changes in the voice, broadening of
the hips in females, broadening of the
shoulders in males, and other
distinguishing characteristics which
we all recognize as separating a child
from the beginning point of an adult.
Until the secondary sex
characteristics begin to appear, the
body does not possess adequate
step backward.
Still, College athletics were
designed to be an amateur extra
curricular activity, and that is the
way it should be.
Either the colleges must band
together to stop the cheating and
other problems, or they should
throw away the current charade
they are calling amateur athletics
and sponsor pro franchises.

hormonal conditions necessary for a
significant increase of muscle
development. More importantly,
there is a possibility that the child
could possibly injure himself or
herself, particularly in the growth
plate area of the bone.
Now thafthe record is straight. Let
me complicate the situation by
putting a big “if” on the whole
matter.
“If” your child is fortunate enough
to have the guidance and supervision
of someone who has a great deal of
expertise in weight training, your
child will benefit from starting to
train with weights at an early age. I
stated that there will only be slight
increases in strength, but there will
never be a decrease. If this slight
increase is accomplished under the
safe guidance of a professional coach,
the increase in strength could be
significant.
Any type of early-age weight
training should however, definatly
consist of light resistance and high
repetition type exercises, while
avoiding heavy resistance.
Overall, the young child would be
better served by exposure to a
variety of activities. Let them do
calesthenics and stretching, again
being certain that what they are
doing is being done correctly.
Some things I would provide for my
children would be a chinning bar for
the development of upper body
strength, a speed bag for the
development of eye-hand
coordination, and a mat or soft
surface which can be used to improve
motor skill performance.
Perhaps the best type of activity to
which you could expose your child,
believe it or not, would be the
opportunity to become involved in a
good ballet or modem dance course.
And that’s another story for another
day.
