Caldwell stresses fire safety
October is Fire Prevention Month
in Georgia, and Johnnie Caldwell,
safety fire commissioner, is urging
Georgians to make sure their homes
are safe.
Caldwell said that each year more
than 200 Georgians are killed in fires,
and about 80 percent of these deaths
occur in home fires.
“The Georgia Fire Marshal’s Of
fice and local fire departments in
spect public buildings to make sure
they’re fire safe,” Caldwell said, “but
we don’t have the right to come into
your home and tell you what to do. So
the safety of your family and per
sonal belongings depends on you.”
Caldwell offered these home fire
safety tips:

• Get one or more smoke detectors.
Fires often start at night when the
family is asleep.
The advance warning of a smoke
detector may mean the difference
between life and death.
• Have a fire extinguisher readily
available. If a small fire is caught in
time, you may be able to quickly put
it out.
• Smoking is a major cause of
house fires. Never smoke in bed, and
keep matches and lighters away from
children.
• Heating and cooking equipment
can both be fire hazards. Exercise
caution when cooking. And make sure
your furnace, stove, fireplace and
other heating equipment are working

properly and used in accordance with
the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Be especially careful with porta
ble space heaters. Keep them away
from curtains, draperies, and other
flammable material.
Make sure there is adequate venti
lation, and always follow the man
ufacturer’s operating instructions.
• Each household should have a
well-rehearsed family escape plan.
All rooms, especially bedrooms,
should have two escape routes.
Plan to get out of the house immedi
ately after fire is discovered, and
have a pre-determined meeting place
outside the house so you can be sure
everyone is out safely.

news in his way. .. (costly!)
When you do decide to listen, we want to say "yes" to your new car financing needs.
You'll love the feel and the sound of your new car. .. it won't talk back to you... but will say
a lot about you.
Well be ready to help at Great Southern when you need new car financing—whether •
