Sawnee Community Center seeks new members
Membership dues to help build facility

Sawnee Community Center, the
organization dedicated to having a
community center in Forsyth County,
has announced plans to hold a mem
bership drive.
A kick-off breakfast for the drive
has been tentatively set for Nov. 5.
Because of the present and antic
ipated growth of Forsyth County, it’s
expected to be a thriving commercial
and industrial area within the next
three to five years.
This is expected to increase the
need for adequate facilities for per
forming arts, training, continuing
education, meetings and banquets.
Another growing need will be recre
ation and entertainment for the coun
ty’s youth.
SCC is hoping a community center
will be available to meet these future
needs.
The drive for a community center
began in 1980 as a project of the
Sawnee Association of the Arts,
which formed a Community Center
Steering Committee.
Since that time, 15% acres of land
on the Ga. 306 Connector have been
purchased for construction of a com
munity center, and a topographical
survey of the property has been com
pleted at a cost of $3,000.
The old Community Center Steer
ing Committee has been replaced by
SCC, which is not affiliated with any

Like the local Chamber of Com
merce, SCC has a board of directors,
and memberships are available to the
public for a fee.
The organization now has a tax
exempt number, which has opened
the door for a membership drive.
Efforts to obtain tax exempt status
for SCC resulted from volunteer work
by Cumming attorney Phill Bettis
and Claude Luke, a local CPA.
Financing of the community center
drive has come through membership
dues, donations, performances of the
Forsyth County Little Theater, lun
cheons and the sale of cookbooks and
calendars.
An attempt was made by the county
in 1982 to obtain a $400,000 Commu
nity Development Block Grant for
construction of the proposed commu
nity center.
However, the grant application was
denied by the Georgia Department of
Community Affairs, which is charged
with reviewing CDBG applications.
DCA was leaning that year toward
water-sewer and housing projects.
It’s believed that money for con
struction of a community center will
have to come from local residents,
and not from grants, because Forsyth
County:
(1) Is not a poor county;
(2) Has few minorities; and
(3) Enjoys a low unemployment
rate.
Plans for a community center here
the retired executive secretary of
Cherokee Presbytery. He and his wife
live at Bent Tree in Pickens County
where he has served as supply pastor
for nine years of the New Lebanon
Presbyterian Church.
Women of the church will begin
their new year and the new Bible
study based on the Apostles’ Creed
when they meet on Monday evening,
Oct. 14, at 7:30 at the church.
High interest
U.S. Savings Bonds
include a large meeting room and a
steam engine pavilion that would
represent an important part of For
syth County’s history.
When time comes to begin con
struction of the building, SCC will be
looking for support from local citi
zens through discounted prices on
materials and free skilled and
unskilled labor.
The immediate goal of SCC is to
pay off the balance ($12,000 plus
interest) owed on the 15% acres des
ignated for construction of the pro
posed community center.
This will be followed by the design
of the building.
When SCC’s membership drive gets
under way later this year, individual
memberships will be offered for $25.
Contributions will be made in the
following groups: Contributor, SSO;
Friend, $100; Sponsor, $200; Donor,
$500; Benefactor, $1,000; and Angel,
$2,500 and up.

Kits/Cats: longhaired, shorthaired, leukemia free.
Pups/Dogs: large, small, tiny; bird dogs, hunting dogs, watch
dogs, sweet dogs.
DO NOT ADOPT ONE OF THESE ANIMALS UNLESS
...you want a well rounded, happy dog/pup or kit/cat.
...you want an animal with a sweet disposition.
...you are willing to spay/neuter for the adoption fee of $35--
dog/pup: $25--kit/cat.
Yes, for that small adoption fee you get an animal that has been
wormed, has injections and the Biggy: The fee pays for the
spay/neuter when of age.
Why such a price? These are pups/dogs & kits/cats that no one
wanted—but us. We have taken them in and have treated them
with tender loving care and have turned them into sweet, lovable
animals. We want them to have the chance to spread their love to
others.
Come and see us but beware: they love to share their love by lick
ing and jumping. Please watch out for our animals when you visit,
we let them out for a walk and when we clean their runs.
