Grant helps industries
Industries and development groups
in the 18-county Gainesville area,
including Forsyth County, now have
greater access to technical assis
tance from Georgia Tech, thanks to a
$300,000 appropriation recommended
by Gov. Joe Frank Harris and passed
by the Georgia Assembly.
The money is being used to expand
five of Georgia Tech’s 12 regional
industrial extension offices. Each of
fice has been staffed by a full-time
resident engineer and a secretary.
The additional funds are enabling
each of the offices in Albany, Au
gusta, Gainesville, Macon and Savan
nah to add another full-time field
engineer and a half-time co-op stu
dent.
The added staff means that many
more industries in the Gainesville
area will receive technical assis
tance. Local industrial development
organizations also will obtain greater

technical support, and extension edu
cation opportunities will be ex
panded. The ultimate aim is to help
the area attract new industries and
new jobs, as well as to help existing
industries become more productive
and to expand.
“We already provide assistance
statewide to more than 1,000 compa
nies and organizations a year,” said
Richard Combes, director of the re
gional office system for the Georgia
Tech Research Institute. “The new
funds will enable us not only to help
more firms, but also to provide a
broader range of assistance. Much or
our aid will continue to be a smaller
firms with little or no technical staff,
but we also will facilitate access by
larger firms to technical information
sources as well as to consulting engi

The Expo will be open from noon to
9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 and
from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday,
Oct. 17.
Visitors are welcome at any time,
but the following schedule is sug

education programs, such as video

“We are excited about the opportu
nity to provide Gainesville Regional
Office and Keith Nelms is the new
field engineer. Counties served by the
office are: Banks, Barrow, Dawson,
Elbert, Forsyth, Franklin, Gwinnett,
Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson,
Lumpkin, Madison, Rabun, Stephens,
Towns, Union and White.
Since the five offices selected for
expansion are located in areas of
industrial concentration, the demand
for ther services has exceeded their
capacity to deliver assistance.
This is the second year in a row that
the Georgia legislature has voted to
expand the industrial development
assistance provided by Georgia Tech.
