Commissioner of Labor Joe Tanner
received 3,620 votes. Tanner’s oppo
nent, Joe Greenberger, received 1,077
votes.
Two races for the Public Service
Commission had mixed results, with
local voters saying “no” to incum
bent Gary Andrews and “yes” to
incumbent Jim Hammock.
Hammock received 4,688 votes
compared to 1,062 for Jim Boyd and
690 for Tim Johnson.
Mac Barber, with 2,029 votes, was
the favorite over Andrews in Forsyth
County. Barber is a former member
of the PSC.
Andrews received 1,878 votes; Den
nis Hoffarth, 137 votes; Clint Kitch
ens, 146 votes; James F. Segars, 110
votes; and J. Rabun Tingle, 92 votes.
Among Republicans running for
Andrews’ seat, Forsyth Countians
gave 99 votes to Leon Barfield and 87
to Frank H. Cofer.
The only Republican running for
Hammock’s seat, John Frank Collins,
received 179 votes.
Results from uncontested state
races were as follows:

A.W. Birdsong, Jr., 2,017 votes,
George H. Carley, 2,019 votes, and
John W. Sognier, 1,966 votes.

“I’m very humbled by the people
giving me the vote of confidence
again,” he said, “and I’m going to
work even harder for them in the
future.”
Both Bennett and Anderson ex
pressed their good feelings about
winning without a runoff in their
respective races. “I was hoping for it,
but I wasn’t expecting it,” Bennett
said late Tuesday.
“I was really overwhelmed by the
support from the people,” Anderson
commented. “Now I just hope we can

Post 3 commission candidate
Brown, though disappointed by what
he considered to be a low voter turn
out and support for his candidacy, did
express optimism about Bennett’s
victory. “I think Michael Bennett will
add some variety to the county com
mission,” he said. “I don't think he’ll
just fall in line with everything the
other commissioners do. He’ll ques
tion things.”
