Sculptors exhibit at High Museum
Show begins Sept. 16
“ Sitings: Aycock, Fleischner,
Miss, Trakas,” an exhibition of 51
drawings by four sculptors, will open
at the High Museum of Art on Sept. 16
and remain on view through Nov. 16.
The sculptors Alice Aycock,
Richard Fleischner, Mary Miss and
George Trakas are best known for
their large-scale environmental art.
“Sitings” will use drawings rather
than photographs, slides or models to
emphasize the conceptual stage of the
artists’ creative process.
It represents the first time that the
four artists have been united in one
exhibition.
The exhibition was organized by
the La Jolla Museum of Contempo
rary Art, with the aid of a grant from
the National Endowments for the
Arts.
As an adjunct to the show, each of
the artists has been commissioned to
create a site-specific sculpture for
one of the museums on the exhibi
tion’s tour.
In Atlanta, Fleischner will design
and build an installation specifically
for the High Museum.
Each of the artists is a builder and
generally works in urban areas.
Their installations are related to
architecture, landscape design and
engineering projects in the forms
they use stairs, ramps, tunnels,
plazas, pathways and foliage pat
terns, and in the materials they use
wood, stone, steel or concrete.
In creating their sculptures, these
artists alter a neutral space and
make it into a specific place, and it is
this awareness of space and site that
unifies them.
Because each artist’s work is re
lated to its specific site, museums
have had difficulty finding a way in
which to exhibit their works.
Some museums have tried to ex
hibit site-related installations
through photographs and slides that
document the work but do not allow
viewers to experience it.

bition.
The 51 drawings, approximately 12
by each artist, vary in size from less
than one square foot to eight square
feet and range in media from char
coal and pastels to ink and pencil to
watercolors. Some are sketches and
others are detailed renderings.
Some of the drawings are studies
for work constructed, some are draw
ings submitted for commissions and
others are not connected to a specific
project but reveal something about
how the artist works.
Fleischner, the artist commis
sioned by the High Museum to create
a site-specific sculpture for the build
ing, received both his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees in fine arts from the
Rhode Island School of Design.
His work also has been included in
numerous exhibitions, including:
• “The Boston Bicentennial Art
Collections,” Institute of Contempo
rary Art (1975);
• “Documents 6,” Kassel, West
Germany (1977);
• “The Figurative Tradition,”
Whitney Museum of Contemporary
Art (1980); and
• “Across the Nation,” National
Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian
Institution (1980).
To augment the exhibition,
Fleischner will lecture on his site
related sculpture on Wednesday,
Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Hill Audito
rium.
This free lecture is sponsored by
the Department of Education: Adult
Programs and the 20th Century Art
Societv.
Seating is limited on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Also augmenting the exhibition will
be the showing of “Artpark People.”
This documentary was filmed dur
ing a summer season at the arts

Niagara Falls and focuses on the
