Four-H’ers sell
Coke bottles
The 4-H Collector Cokes that sold
well in Forsyth County two years ago
will be available here again in the
next two weeks.
Members of the local 4-H Club sold
41 cases of the Cokes in 1984.
And, they sold their supply faster
than any other club in Georgia.
Proceeds from the sale of the Cokes
will go into a $2 million fund-raising
campaign to benefit Rock Eagle 4-H
Camp near Eatonton.
The 32-year-old camp has hosted
more than 1 million 4-H’ers.
A tribute to Rock Eagle is printed
on the back of the Collector Cokes,
with the green and white 4-H symbol
on the front.
Extension Agent Clark Beusse said
the Cokes will sell for $1.25 each. He
said about 50 cases of the collector’s
items are available.
Adopt warm, fuzzy pet
for protection and love
WANTED: Child, adult or family
who is looking for companionship,
love and a best friend to pal around
with. Am single, four-legged and easy
to please. I enjoy going for walks,
snuggling at night and watching tele
vision. I like to play frisbee and can
be trained to perform tricks, fetch
slippers and newspapers. I am loyal,
loving and will protect your home.
If each and every homeless, aban
doned and lost dog were to place such
an ad, there would be some 12 million
advertisements annually. For this
reason, more than 800 animal shel
ters are proclaiming October as
Adopt-a-Dog Month, now in its sixth
important year.

Volunteers help carry out
local 4-H Club programs
As National 4-H Week is celebrated
we would like to share with you a few
facts about the club we call 4-H.
There are 163,376 youth, ages 9 to
19, enrolled in the University of
Georgia’s 4-H program, including
over 1,000 4-H members in Forsyth
County. Georgia is second in the
number of youth enrolled in orga
nized 4-H clubs.
County Extension Agents play a
vital role in 4-H but county agents
couldn’t carry out this active pro
gram alone. Currently, 13,928 adult 4-
H volunteers are members of the
staff serving the 4-H program across
Georgia. The average volunteer con
tributes 160 hours of time, drives 400
miles. If these volunteers were paid
for their efforts at minimum wage
and reimbursed at 22 cents per mile,
the value to the Georgia 4-H program
would be more than $5 million.
In 1986 4-H’ers were awarded col
lege scholarships totaling $40,800 and
low interest college loans totaling
$13,000. In 1986 over $103,000 in 4-H
Camp Counselor Work Scholarships
were awarded to Georgia 4-H mem
bers. The total for loans and schol
arships was $161,155.
This year, 10,729 Georgia 4-H mem
bers attended week-long 4-H camps
at one of Georgia’s five 4-H centers,

nearly 100 of these 4-H’ers were from
Forsyth County. Summer camp is a
vital aspect of the 4-H program. Be
cause of the geographic location of
the five centers, 4-H’ers have the
opportunity to camp in the moun
tains, near the city or by the sea
shore.
In 1986, 93 Forsyth County 4-H’ers
competed at district or/and state 4-H
contests. Four-H’ers attended com
petitive events such as 4-H District
Project Achievement, Livestock
Judging Contests, Poultry Judging
Contests, Talent competition and the
list goes on and on.
A major part of the 4-H experience
is learning by doing. This past year
over 800 4-H’ers from Forsyth County
participated in 14 “special 4-H
events.” These special events in
cludes summer classes, trip to see
Nutcracker play, ski trip to Sky Val
ley and even a plane trip to Jackson
ville, Florida.
If you would like to learn more
about 4-H and how you can become
involved in this active club contact
the Forsyth County Extension Serv
ice.
