Appeals board rejects variance By Gary Tanner Stall writer Sometime a lot can be too little, as builder Philip out at Monday night’s regular meeting of the Forsyth County Appeals Board. Whelchel was asked by an absentee landowner to put up a house on a lot near the lake. But when he surveyed the lot with all applicable setbacks met, he discovered there was not enough land left over on which to build. After hearing testimony from nearby homeowner Bruce Hearn, who argued a house on the lot would be squeezing too many houses in” the area, the board voted to deny the variance. In other action: • The board voted to dismiss a lot size variance request of 1.20 acres for Lila W. Johnson when she failed to appear at the meeting. The request was carried over from the previous meeting’s agenda. • In another item of old business, the board decided that a revised request from Bernard Gilleland for a building line width variance of 38 feet was not sufficiently Decorations competition is under way Has the ghost of turkey repast left you with the Christmas spirit? Gerald Sweatman, the aplicant’s son, said that the mobile home would be usea to house someone to take care of Mrs. Sweatman, who is ill. • Don and Linda Stafford received an approval of their request for a rear yard variance of 10 feet to allow installation of a pool house. • In an unusual request, Whelchel represented Dennis M. Shoup in asking for a front yard variance of 20 feet on 13 lots in the Chestatee Heights subdivision. On hand for the Cherokee receives waste grant Cherokee County has received a $50,000 state solid waste management grant which will match local funds to assist with the purchase of sanitary landfill equipment This grant money is part of the $2 million set aside by the 1986 General Assembly to assist cities and counties with their solid waste collection and disposal activities. The matching funds are administered by the Environ mental Protection Division of the Department of Natural Resources. Communities throughout the state were encouraged to write the department and identify their needs for financial assistance. ‘‘The limited grant funds are being awarded to those Extra beds are approved for Lakeside The state Health Planning Agency has issued a certifi cate-of-need to Lakeside Community Hospital for the establishment of 10 swing beds. Ledbetter also said that though the funds are limited, each year the state grants assist many local govern ments that would otherwise have significant problems operating adequate collection and disposal programs for their citizens. The solid waste management grants are administered under guidelines established by the Board of Natural Resources. Donald J.
