4-H Club
By Laurie Pirkle
Forsyth County 4-H’er
Four-H is “known” by most peo
ple as “Hay, Hicks, Hogs, and
Horses.” Well that’s not quite true.
Four-H is a club of many different
project areas. It is true that 4-H has
project areas of hogs, known as
swine, and horses, but it also has
project areas of electronics, auto
motive, food preservation, and per
forming arts. Through the variety of
different project areas available to
choose from young people can choose
an area that interests them or one
that they have a special talent for
doing.
Four-H is important because it
helps a young person to grow in ways
that are good for them. Through 4-H a
person can develop leadership skills
that are useful when a young person
goes out into the business world.
Speaking skills re developed through
the many hours of practice and com
petition in the project area. These
speaking skills are useful in doing
oral presentations in high school and
college and during job interviews.
Lasting friendships have also been
developed througy the 4-H Club.
Young people are around people their
own age without some of the pres
sures of drugs and alcohol. With these
pressures out of the way, young peo
ple are able to let friendships grow
and flourish in a healthy environ
ment.

Georgia. You may be asking yourself who would
want to spend their precious summer vacation in
this manner? The answer is a special breed of
college students that work as 4-H Camp Counsel
ors.
The 4-H Program has five camps scattered all
over the state of Georgia. There is Camp Jekyll

won a trip to Chicago to the
National 4-H Congress. These
high school students won County
lanta), and Rock Eagle (Eatonton). Of these five
camps, Rock Eagle is the largest and camps
around 950 campers each week of its camping
season. There are 65 counselors that work at Rock
Eagle and five to seven counselors that work at
each small camp.
It is not the money that attracts these counsel
ors, but the unique chance to work with children
ranging from ages 9-15 and possibly changing
their lives. The goal of a counselor is to give each
child the best week of their summer. It is difficult
to describe 4-H camp unless you have been there
and experienced it. I could talk about it all day and
you might think you understand but you still would
not have felt it.
I want to return each summer because of the

Devin Wright,
a winner
By Devin Wright
Forsyth County 4-H’er
National 4-H Congress is the ulti
mate goal for all senior 4-H’ers. You
get to spend a week in Chicago with
others who have won County Project
Achievement, District Project
Achievement and State Congress,
like yourself. Your hotel is one of the
finest if Chicago and the food, enter
tainment, and hospitality are superb.
Each night we had famous speak
ers come and talk to us. Miss Amer
ica, Sen. Dole, and Orville
Redenbacker were just a few of the
speakers we heard. Some nights our
meetings would not be over until 2
a.m. and then we would get up at 5
a.m. the next morning, to go on a tour
or attend classes.
One of the things that makes Na
tional 4-H Congress,so unique is that
you know if you are a winner before
you go to Chicago. Instead of doing a
project and recordbook, you just do a
recordbook. You usually compete
with about 50 others in your project.
Mine was Forestry and I was one of
the top six in my project. If you are in
the top six you are considered a
winner. I was awarded a SI,OOO schol
arship. Some win more, some less,
but no matter what you win, you
receive the satisfaction of reaching
the goal that you set for yourself
years before.
special friendships made with the other counsel
ors and especially because of the kids. You know
that all of your hard work is worthwhile when
right before the kids leave on Friday morning,
little arms wrap around your waist and a small
sniffling voice says, “I don’t want to go home, can
I stay for the rest of the summer?” It makes your
heart turn a little flip to know that you’ve touched
someone else’s life.
I could describe the rest of camp for instance
that Rock Eagle (where I worked) is divided into
three Indian tribes with six working divisions of
camp but it is difficult to explain on paper. I have
touched on the essential goal and feeling of camp,
and I encourage you to go and experience a fun
filled week of fantasy.
