Cope With Stress
(Part 1 in a 3 part series)
We can't avoid stress from life's daily
pressures-family problems, job frustra
tions, traffic jams, the treats of crime
and disaster in the news. But we can
learn to cope with stress in a healthful
way. We can even learn "to relax and en
joy it."
Scientists and clinicians are finding out
more about stress all the time. They
know that our bodies react automatically
to modern "stressors," our 20th century
threats and fears and frustrations, in
much the same way as our cavedwelling
ancestors reacted to saber-tooth tigers
and other pre-historic threats.
Thus, when we perceive today's
pressures as threats, our bodies still
prepare us to "fight or flee." Our glands
pour out hormones, such as adrenalin
and corticosteroids, which make our
hearts race, our blood pressures soar,
our neck, jaw and shoulder muscles
tighten into knots. And, according to
researchers in a comparatively new
scientific discipline, psychoneuroim
munology, too constant production of
those "stress hormones" suppresses our
immune systems, making us more
susceptible to a wide range of diseases,
including infections, digestive troubles,
back and neck problems, heart disease,
high blood pressure and even certain
cancers. In fact, interaction between
mind and body, stress, is involved in 75
percent of our 20th century diseases, in
the opinion of Dr. Herbert Benson of Har
vard, a "behavioral medicine"' authority.
What con be done about it? Scientists
and clinicians have learned from ex
perience that there's no safe chemical
"cure" for stress.
So they turned back to the advice of
the famous stress pioneer, Dr. Hans
Selye, who had pointed out:
"It's not the amount of stress you have
as much as the way you handle it." In
keeping with the holistic philosophy,
they investigated natural, drugless
methods for coping with stress. Based on
their research and practical clinical ex
perience, here are some methods that
may fit your needs:
Perceive life positively- How you "han
dle stress’" depends first and foremost on
how you view the "stressors" - how you
perceive situations and events.
One person's stress may be another
person's energy. Two stress
psychologists, Drs. Suzanne Kobaska and
Salvatore Matie, recently studies a large
group of persons who faced the same ex-

tremely shaky job situation. Those who
survived the stressful times best had
these distinctive "hardy personality"
qualities: (1) They viewed change as a
challenge, not a threat; (2) they were
much more committed to their jobs, their
families and other important values: (3)
they felt more in control, displaying op
timism and a belief that they could in
fluence events.
The power of positive thinking was
given top credit by Norman Cousins, the
famous author, who fought back to
health against great odds from a crippl
ing collagen disease and later from a
severe heart attack. Laughing at
humorous books and old comedy films -
which Cousins called his "internal jogg
ing” - was his more publicized stress
therapy. But, he pointed out later, his
"remedy of laughter” was a metaphor for
a full range of positive emotions - "hope,
faith, love determination, the will to live,
creativity, festivity, heightened
purpose."
