Homeowners fight 2 rezonings; both denied
By Lindsey Kelly
St«H writer
Protesting homeowners succeeded in getting the
Planning and Zoning Commission to recommend
denial for two commercial rezoning requests and
got another applicant to withdraw a similar re
quest during the commission’s public hearings
Tuesday night.
The commissioners declined to recommend to
the County Commission a commercial rezoning re
quest filed by Bruce MeCreery after homeowners
voiced objections to McCreery’s plans to put an
office building on a 2.86 acre lot near the entrance
of the Bald Ridge subdivision.
MeCreery had wanted the property, located two
miles east on Bald Ridge Marina Road at the inter
section of Peachtree Road, moned from multi
family residential to commercial, but residents
living in the subdivision objected to the “great un
known” of what could be located on the property if
a commercial zoning were granted.
Local attorney and city Councilman Ken Van
derhoff appeared before the commision on behalf
of residents of the Cove Creek subdivision who
were in opposition to a commercial rezoning re
quest filed by Richard Walker concerning a 1.18
acre lot in the lakefront neighborhood. Hie proper
ty in question is currently zoned vacation cottage.
Walker said he wanted to use the lot to build a
home and a “bird shack” size office building for
mortgage business, but Vanderhoff said subdivi
sion residents were concerned about what a “bird
shack” would do to the property values of the ex
pensive lakefront property.
Commissioners voted against recommending
the request.
Objections from neighbors also caused Janis
Durante to withdraw her request for a commercial
County still seeking purchasing agent
By Kathey Pruitt
Staff writer
More than two months after its creation, the office of
Forsyth County’s purchasing agent is still vacant, but
county commissioners say they are narrowing the field of
applicants.
“We’re still looking at applications right now,” said
County Administrator Ralph Roberts. “We should know
something in a couple of weeks.”
County officials thought they had filled the position in
late October when they offered the job to a purchasing
agent from Hall County. But the tentative agreement
broke down after Hall County stepped up efforts to keep
the 13-year employee on its payroll, according to
commissioners.
Interviews with a second applicant were unfruitful be
cause he didn’t want to hold the job longer than a year,

rezoning of a portion of her property on Little Mill
Road near the intersection of Brown’s Bridge
Road. Durante wanted to put a small gardening
nursery on the land, but other residents in the sub
division protested that covenants governing prop
erty use in the subdivision prohibits commercial
activity.
Neighboring residents also objected to rezoning
of a 58.35 acre parcel on Sharon and Clements Road
near the intersection of Ga. 141 for the develop
ment of a subdivision. The protests were to no
avail, however.
The request, asking that the property be rezoned
from agricultural to restricted residential, was
submitted by Horace Trammel. Trammel said he
intends to use the property to develop an “adult
community,” primarily for residents aged 40 and
over, consisting of between 60 and 62 lots.
Among the objections raised was concern over
potential run-off problems that could affect a creek
near the property. However, commission Chair
man Jim Ponder said deciding environmental is
sues is not part of the commission’s discretion.
Commissioners voted to recommend the rezoning
as requested.
In other business, the commission voted to rec
ommend a request by Debbie Muller for a special
use permit to allow her to operate a beauty salon
from her home off Ga. 369.
Other requests that received approval recom
mendations were as follows:
• Larry Downing 3.74 acres on Holland
Drive %-mile off Shady Grove Road; rezone from
vacation cottage to vacation cottage restricted for
the addition of three lots to the neighboring Hamil
ton Court subdivision.
• L.W. Rucker 4.09 acres located three miles
south on Old Atlanta Road near the intersection of
Pendley Road; rezone from agricultural and resi
and wanted to bring with him a salaried assistant who
would completely take over the purchasing office after 12
months, according to Commissioner David Gilbert.
County commissioners began efforts early this fail to
hire an employee to coordinate purchases for all county
departments.
“One of our main concerns is that there is too much
money spent piecemeal, ’ ’ said Commissioner James Har
rington. “We’ve got to do something to get down to busi
ness when it comes to spending county money. The pur
chasing agent will save several times enough money to
pay his or her salary.”
Original plans called for a purchasing agent and a per
sonnel director, both new offices in Forsyth County gov
ernment, to begin work at the beginning of November.
Jesse Knight, former personnel manager for the city of
Americus in southeast Georgia, accepted the personnel
directorship in early October and began work Nov. 2.
