Forsyth County High School brought some excitement and a brief scare
as an old trailer used for storage caught fire. Firefighters put the fire out
which was started from the furnace area. There was no damage.
Georgia military scholarships available
Nomination forms for the Georgia Military Scholarship
Program are now available through the office of state
Sen. Sallie Newbill of Sandy Springs.
Newbill said the Georgia Military Scholarship provides
for 30 full four-year military scholarships per year to
North Georgia College in Dahlonega which is a part of the
University System of Georgia. The scholarships are allot
ted three per Congressional District in the state.
The program was created by an act of the Georgia Gen
eral Assembly to recognize the preeminence of North
Georgia College among military institutions and to pro
vide a source of commissioned officers for the Georgia
Army National Guard.
The scholarship covers all costs of room, board, tuition,
fees, books, supplies, and uniforms. In addition, scholar
ship students will receive Army National Guard and

Army ROTC pay. The current value of the scholarship is
more than $20,000.
A scholarship candidate must be a resident of Georgia;
be nominated by a state legislator; have a minimum high
school average of 3.0 and a minimum SAT score of 900;
meet National Guard standards; and be admitted to
North Georgia College. Additionally, a recipient of the
scholarship serves as an enlisted member of the Georgia
Army National Guard while in college, and after gradua
tion, is expected to serve four years as a commissioned
officer.
The deadline for completion of all application materials
is Jan. 1,1988. The selection committee meets in Febru
ary and scholarships are announced in March. Nomina
tion forms can be obtained through Sen. Newbill at either

Landfill
hearing
Tuesday
A public meeting concerning the
proposal to locate a sanitary landfill
in north Fulton County near the For
syth County line is Tuesday beginning
at 7:30 p.m. at the Milton High School
gymnasium.
The meeting will be conducted by
the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources and will address environ
mental issues related to the protec
tion of land, water and air. Milton
High School is on School Drive in Al
pharetta, just off of Main Street.
The DNR will not discuss zoning,
land use, noise, or traffic; those ques
tions should be directed to the Fulton
County Commission.
DNR staff members will discuss the
geological aspects of the site, pro
posed design of the facility, the
groundwater monitoring program,
measures to assure the protection of
surface water and erosion and sedi
mentation control.
The DNR will also conduct a public
hearing on Dec. 17 at Milton High
School beginning at 7:30 p.m. State
ments reguarding the landfill may be
made orally or in writing. Oral state
ments will be limited to five minutes.
To accommodate those who want to
make a statement, but are unable to
attend, the record will remain open
until Dec. 29.
