It's no secret the Germans are among the most
demanding drivers in the world. And, it just so
happens the sports sedans they demand most are
the Audi 80 series, Audi 80 and 80 Quattro.
Well, now they're here and available to equally
demanding American drivers.
In 1988, the permanent all-wheel drive system of
the new Audi 80 Quattro perhaps best exemplifies
Audi’s commitment to automotive advancement.
This worldwide rally-proven system has been refined
to include a new TORSEN® differential that auto
matically distributes engine power to all four wheels.
The new Audi 80, meanwhile, is equipped with
reassuring front-wheel drive.
The shape of both cars is very distinct. Short rear
decks, sloping hoods, flush side windows and door
handles are responsible for a shape that is almost
aerodynamically perfect. (The cd of the Audi 80 is
an enviable 0.31.)

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS —WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1987-
Station tests soap
to cut deer browsing
By Hugh McMillian
Forsyth County Extension Service
Deer browsing has long been recog
nized as a serious problem for fruit
trees as well as many other plants.
Numerous methods have been pur
ported to control deer damage, how
ever, real evidence (data) has been
non-existent. To date, fencing has
been the only dependable method for
eliminating deer damage under high
animal pressure, but this method can
be very expensive. In areas of moder
ate to low deer pressure, repellents
have had some results, but may be
short-lived, require repeated applica
tion, and are variable in effective
ness. Odor repellents are more desir
able than taste repellents since they
repel browsing without damaging the
plants and may reduce antler
rubbing.
Recent work by Virginia research
ers reveals that soap bars did reduce
deer damage to apple trees. In June
1986, a drought hit the Virginia Poly
technic Institute and State Universi
ty’s Winchester Agricultural Experi
ment Station. This drought caused
deer to be more aggressive and dam
age occurred. After damage started
to appear, Lifebouy soap bars were
paced on 4-foot sakes at 15-foot inter
vals in the apple nursery rows. This
prevented deer damage into leaf fall
in October 1986, even though fruit
trees in adjacent nursery rows were
severely damaged in September with
in 150 feet of where the soap was
placed.

ers and university personnel, a re
search trial was set up to test the ef
fectiveness of Lifebouy soap for
repellency. For the test, 90 apple trees
in 1-gallon metal cans were paced in
an area with a high deer population
for 14 days. Trees were pruned to
leave 3 shoots per tree above the main
scaffolds. In an experimental ar
rangement, the 90 trees were divided
equally among 3 treatments which
were compared for effectiveness.
Treatments were 1) control; 2)
barbed wire (four 2-foot stands taped
to the main stem; and 3) Lifebouy
soap suspended form the main fork of
the branched tree. Trees were in
spected daily and data on a per-tree
and shoot basis were taken. Of the 30
control trees, 43% were browsed, and
35% of the 90 shoots were browsed
during the second week. None of the
trees with Lifebouy attached had any
damage.
The barbed wire treatment showed
damage on 305 of the trees and 16% of
the shoots. The number of shoots
browsed was significantly lower than
the control trees; however, there was
a similar number of trees damaged.
Barbed wire is not recommended be
cause it is cumbersome, hazardous to
people working with the trees, and
time-consuming to attach.
The outstanding deer repellency of
Lifebouy soap in the above study con
firms earlier observations made at
the experiment station. Identification
of the effective fragrances and the de
velopment of a sprayable product
could lead to an effective repellent for
use in orchards.
