DEAR ABBY: A short time ago, my
niece, Mrs. Donald Palumbo, had an
accident at home. She was helpless
and couldn’t reach the phone. Fortu
nately, she had taught Gina, her 3-
year-old daughter, how to make a few
phone calls, so that child called the
operator and told her to send the po
lice and an ambulance!
The police came right out, this child
let them in, and from that point on
everything was taken care of. So you
see, it pays to teach them young.

DEAR ABBY: I am a radio dis
patcher for the local police depart
ment. I answer all the calls and dis
patch the police, paramedics,
firefighters, etc. These are all emer
gency calls.
Lately our department has been
having a serious problem that I am
sure we share with other dispatchers.
We receive at least 25 calls a day
from children who are “playing” on
the phone. I can understand that par
ents want their children to know how
to contact the police or fire depart
ment in case of an emergency, but
these children should be taught to call
