Part of life’s risky business
is to learn to laugh and love
DEAR ABBY: Recently I was told
that I should take risks. So this morn
ing I took a risk and got out of bed;
took a risk and drove to work without
an accident; took yet another risk and
turned on my typewriter so that I
might write to you.
I will take the risk that the postal
system will forward this on to you.
The following is a verse that I have
hanging on my wall. I am not sure who
the author is or where the verse was
taken from, but I know others will en
joy reading it.
I also hope that you will take a risk
and print this in your column. Just
sign me ... TAKING A RISK IN
CANADA
TO DARE
To laugh is to nsk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing
sentimental.
To reach for another is to risk
involvement.
To expose your ideas, your dreams,
before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in
return.
To live is to risk dying.
To believe is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken, because the
greatest hazard in life is to risk
nothing.
The people who risk nothing, do noth
ing, have nothing, are nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow,
but they cannot learn, feel, change,
grow, love, live.
Chained by their attitudes, they are
slaves; they have forfeited their
freedom.
Only a person who risks is free.
DEAR TAXING: I, too, am an occa
sional risk-taker. I’m Drinting the

Dear
Abby
Columnist
poem on the chance that most of my
readers will appreciate its value. I
did.
DEAR READERS: This is for my
“Now I’ve Seen Everything” file:
DEAR ABBY: We have attended
many baby showers for the children of
“friends,” many of whom we would
not know if we saw them on the street.
However, this is the first time we
have ever been asked to contribute
without the benefit of even meeting
the guest of honor or tasting a piece of
cake and ice cream.
What do you think of the enclosed
“invitation”? - NONPLUSSED IN
EUGENE, ORE.
DEAR NONPLUSSED: This is a
first. As a gesture of charity to the two
“hostesses,” I have withheld their
names:
“IT’S A MONEY TREE SHOWER
FOR JENNIFER D. AND ABDUL J.!
“Dear friends and family: Who
says you can’t have a baby shower
just because the expecting mother is
about 3,000 miles away? Well, I say
we can and would like to invite you all
to share in Jennifer and Abdul’s joy
ous occasion. How can we do this?
“Well, all packages need to be thin,
neatly wrapped, light in weight and no
fore now. Set the example for others
and try not to be overly self-insistent.
Your determination will get you
where you want to go.
SAGITTARIUS(Nov. 22 to Dec.
21)
You could be inconsistent in the way
you handle your monies today. You
veer from over-caution to extrava
gance. Avoid obviously dangerous sit
uations now.
CAPRICORN(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
A crisis of leadership could occur
within a club activity. Know which
side you’re on. Your loyalty is tested.

So, readers, have you now seen ev
erything? I think this is the end of eti
quette as we know it.
DEAR ABBY: On your answer to
the promise of the sister to bury her
mother in a different cemetery from
where the father was recently buried,
I recall a favorite story of another
burial request: It seems an elderly
man outlived two wives. His burial re
quest was that he be buried between
his two wives, adding, “but please tilt
me toward Nellie.” - A RETIRED
PASTOR IN VA.
DEAR ABBY: I know people who
proudly recite by heart every single
gift they have ever given anyone -
also every favor they have ever done
anyone in their entire lifetime.
I used to admire the terrific memo
ries of people like this until I realized
it’s much easier to remember a short
list than a long one. -BARBARA
SACKS, ORANGE, N.J.
DEAR BARBARA: We all know
people like that. It’s one thing to re
member, but to “recite” it is some
thing else.
Abby’s favorite family recipes are
included in her new cookbooklet. Send
