Leman C. Parks becomes
Postmaster in Cumming
Leman C. Parks returns to his na
tive hometown as Postmaster at Cum
ming, Georgia effective November
18, 1989, Atlanta Division Manager/
Postmaster Richard I. Carleton an
nounced today.
“I’m really delighted to be home
again after being gone for 27 years,”
said Parks.
“I have family who have lived here
in Cumming all along, so I never real
ly left.”
Parks, 45, began his postal career in
1964 as a Distribution Clerk at the At
lanta, Georgia Post Office.
He has served in serveral positions
in Atlanta post offices during his ca
reer, including Foreman of Station
Operations and Delivery, Assistant
Manager of Station Operations, and
Manager at the Chamblee and Briar
cliff Branch operations.

Armed with flint lock pistol, man robs store

An armed robber sporting a flint
lock pistol robbed the Minit Save on
Hwy. 9 North on Thursday, Nov. 23,
said Cumming Assistant Police Chief
Buck Jones.
Police continue to search for the
man described as a male in his mid
20’s with hazel eyes and light brown

they are tar outnumbered, she said.
Leaves did shed their summer green
shades for more colorful hues but the
result wasn’t as phenomenal as in
years past.
“They changed, and they didn’t
change,” said Henry Chambers,
trails coordinator for the Georgia De
partment of Natural Resources.
Between Oct. 22 and 25, nature be
gan taking its course, he said. Maple
tree foliage turned red, poplar trees
leaves turned a yellowish color, but
they didn’t look as pretty, and they
didn’t last long. Days after they
turned, they started falling to the
ground, he said.
At Fort Mountain State Park near
Chatsworth, colorful leaves usually
grace the earth with their beauty dur
ing the middle of October and first of
November, but this year their reign
was brief.
“They turned and looked real pretty
for three days, said Steve Pagano, as
sistant superintendent at Fort Moun
tain State Park.
Last year, tree limbs held arrange
ments of red, gold and yellow leaves
for three weeks, he said. This year,
they only stayed three days.
Reports were similar at other state
parks. At Cloudlane Canyon, leaves
didn’t turn as early as usual and only
lasted about a week, said Herman
'Channel, park superintendent. When
they first turned, they were dull, then
last week, colors brightened, he said.
What remains on the trees is expect
ed to have fallen by the beginning of
the week, said Channel. Brilliant col
ored leaves were “almost non-exis
tent” at Vogel State Park near Blairs
ville, park officials said.
Some mountain areas made good
viewing spots but overall it was a bad

postmaster experience to his
hometown.
Prior to his recent appointment at
Cumming, he served as Postmaster
at Smyrna, for 13 years.
“We plan to give the best service we
possibly can, so if anyone has a prob
lem, I’d like for people to let me know,
because service is our name,” Parks
said.
Park has three daughters, Tammi,
24, Crissie, 20 and Nikki, 17. He re
sides in Alpharetta.
The man’s height was estimated by
the store clerk to be 5 feet 10 inches
tall, and weighing approximately 165
pounds.
The robber was wearing a blue
checkered flannel shirt, blue jeans,
and black tennis shoes.
According to the police report, the
man entered the store alone at ap
year, admits Ms. Palmer. North
Georgia hasn’t experienced drab col
ors like these in about 11 years, ac
cording to sources.
With some much focus on the north
Georgia mountains, leaf-watchers
seemed to have missed the highlights,
said Chambers. The best viewing ar
eas this year were around Columbus
and Pine Mountain, he said.
All during spring and summer,
leaves serve as a factory that manu
factures food for the tree. This food
making process takes place in leaf
cells containing chlorophyll, (the pig
ment which gives leaves their sum
mer green hue.) They also have yel

hidden by the green color most of the
year. Until fall.
Partly, because of the period of day
light and changes in temperature,
leaves stop making food for the tree.
When this occurs, the chlorophyll
breaks down and the leaves’ green
color disappears. That’s when the yel
lowish colors become visible and give
the leaves part of their fall beauty.
Other chemical processes occur to
bring in other colors.
Each year, around the third week of
October, leaves go through this pro
cess, but this year the colors were not
as eyecatching and began falling to
the ground as soon as they changed.
