F.d Jenkins and his trusty bulldozer
County landfill operator, Ed Jenkins
By Jeanne Morns
Special to the Forsyth County News
Ed Jenkins 54, has been Dawson
County’s landfill operator for the past
six years.
Jenkins job is one colossal clean-up
mission as he makes sure that tons of
Dawson trash is neatly covered with
dirt. Aboard his trusty bull-dozer,
Jenkins said that his job is never bor
ing because the landfill is constantly
in demand.
“ Six years ago, I only had to go
down into the pit one time a day. You
can sure tell Dawson County’s grow
ing fast because now I have to go down
into the trash hole with my bull dozer
several times a day,” he said. “I stay
at it pretty well all day. We’re getting
three times or even more trash now
than we did when I first started.”
Being a landfill operator has it’s
moments. There’s always the danger
of someone dumping garbage on you
when you’re down there inspecting
the pit. And sometimes Jenkins says
he is called on to help retrieve a watch
or a set of car keys that was inadver
tently tossed with the week’s supply of
refuse.
The landfill is filling up fast and
Jenkins estimates there’s enough
room for five more years of buried
trash- that is if Dawson County
doesn’t suddenly experience a popula
tion explosion.
Jenkins and his wife Peggy who is a
therapist in Cumming, have been
married 35 years. They have four kids
and five grandkids.
Originally from Cobb County, Jen
kins said he moved his family to Daw
son 13 years ago after driving through
the County during a trip to Cherokee,
S.C.
“ It was such a friendly town, we
decided we wanted to get out of the
hassle of Cobb County and live here,”
he said. “We went up to the town
Square or. the side
walk. The merchants were all so
friendly. Occasionally, a car would go
by. Now it look 3 like we’re going to
have to put a red light up.”
What’s the secret to a happy mar
riage?
Jenkins says,“ It’s a 50-50 partner
ship. As long as one doesn’t try to take
everything from the other, you can
live together.”
Jenkins said Peggy does the cook
ing and he washes the dishes. Peggy
helps cut wood, and in turn, Jenkins
helps vacuum the house.
