Letters to the Editor
EDITOR:
I have been anticipating the re
emerging of Tom Bowers and his
group of local businessmen, traveling
under the innocuous and very inno
cent sounding guise of “Forward For
syth, Inc.” Now who can quarrel with a
name like that? Sort of like attacking
God, country, the flag and mom’s ap
ple pie, if you say anything against
them.
I would like to make several points;
not the least of which is - how long
does Mr. Bowers have to secure 35
percent of the signatures of registered
voters in Forsyth County? If they have
been collectingssoo signatures over a
three year period, are all those 4,500
still residents? Still registered to vote?
Still alive?
I have no quarrel with Mr. Bower’s
statement that "the people deserve
the opportunity to voice their opin-
EDITOR:
We are writing this letter to enlight
en the citizens of Forsyth County to a
situation that exists at Coal Mountain
Elementary School.
One morning last week our 10-year
old son was accosted from his class
room i nto the hal 1 by another student's
father. The man proceeded to repri
mand our son rather firmly and then
threatened him to leave his son alone.
Our son was sent back into his class
room feeling humiliated and very
near the point of tears, where he had
to face the remainder of the school
day.
Aftercontactingthe principal ofthis
school and inquiring as to how this
was allowed to happen, we learned
that the man went to the classroom
and simply asked to speak with our
son. The teacher in turn sent our son
out into the hall.
We have been told that this man did

ion.” My quarrel is with the “big lie”
contained in their mail out last year,
which stated, in effect, that a yes vote
would attract industry, reduce proper
ty tax, etc.
Voters of Forsyth County, let me
give you a couple of points to ponder.
We moved to Forsyth County in 1988
because of the quality of 1 ife. which we
saw and felt and now enjoy. We moved
here from DeKalb County, Georgia. In
the late 1960 s we were told the very
same “big lie,” which Forward For
syth, Inc. is now telling you. Our De-
Kalb County property tax was to be
reduced because of the beer and alco
hol income; we were going to draw
more industry; crime would not be
come a problem; DUI would not be a
problem and the biggest “lie” of them
all was if we don’t vote this in to

not report to the office first, he went
directly to the classroom.
As you may be aware, signs are
clearly posted at each entrance to the
school. There are five separate no
tices at the front entrance, alone. “All
visitors must report to the office,”
state three notices. “Trespassing or
loitering on school premises is strictly
prohibited.” state others.
This man was in clear violation of
school policy, yet we have been in
formed by the school administrators
that nothing will be done to chasten
him. Why have this policy if it is not
going to be enforce? Apparently
“strictly enforced” means nothing to
this man or the school principal. The
fact is that this man used poor judg
ment in what he did. Are the school
administrators using poor judgment
by allowing him to get away with this
obtrusive violation upon the rights of
our son?

Dear folks, if sale of beer and wine,
or alcohol, is legal in the City of Cum
ming, why is it needed in Forsyth
County? If you live north ofCumming,
you can goto Dawson County (or Cum
ming). If you live south of Cumming,
you can go to North Fulton or Roswell
(or Cumming) and if you live west of
Cumming, you can go to Canton or
Cherokee County (or Cumming).
I am mindful of the fact that a lot of
people have moved into our county
from other parts of the country where
alcohol or drinks were readily avail
able, but I have to ask the questions -
why did you choose Forsyth County,
knowingthat is was a "dry” county? I’ll
tell you why - because you saw a qual
ity of life here you could not find in any
other metro county and that quality
included not having alcohol available.
Otherwise, you would now be living in
How do we impress upon our chil

and respecting the rights of others,
w hen we as adults don't do it?
We are aware that the perpetrator
has been “involved” with the school,
volunteering his time and has even
planted a few trees to help landscape
the grounds. This is very commend
able. However, we do not feel that this
gives him the “clout” to ignore the
school policies. We feel that the prin

Are our children safe? What expla

“Twenty years ago Mom helped us manage our money...
Now, my checking account at Home Federal manages where Mom left off...
When I graduated from college, it didn’t take long to understand that money
management was a little more difficult than asking Mom and Dad for an
allowance. When I opened my first checking account, I never knew exactly what
I was paying in service charges and fees. It was really confusing.
Then, I moved my account to Home Federal. Their checking account is
simple...nothing is hidden. And, you can earn interest! When you use Home
Federal’s 24-Hour Homebanker ATM card. ..THERE IS NO CHARGE AT
ALL. Even if you use other bank’s ATM machines through the Avail, Plus,
Honor or Alert networks.
My Home Federal checking account practically manages itself!
There will never be any substitute, but I feel sure the folks at Home Federal
manage my money as carefully as... Mom.

If Mr. Bow ers feels that the sale of
beer and wine is “not a drug abuse
issue." he should pay a visit to the For
syth County Sheriff’s office now and
reviewtheir statistics, while the coun
ty is yet “dry ”
The truth of this issue is that Mr.
Bowers and his associates have one
thing in mind - profit! There’s noth
ing wrong with profit, but with all the
problems we are now experiencing
with drug abuse, which includes alco
hol and driving under the influence,
do we really need in Forsyth County
additional sources of availability? I
think not!
Mine will be a voice crying in the

fice. We as parents “assumed” that
our child was in the care of responsi
ble adult while at school. Perhaps the
school should implement a system of
verification from the office when
someone other than a parents or
school official attempts to remove a
child from the classroom, perhaps the
intercom system could be used forthis
purpose.
Must we wait for something dread
ful to happen before our school ad
ministration take this sort of thing se
riously'.’ We hope not, then it may be
too late. We are thankful that our son
wasn't harmed physically, but we are
appalled by the fact that this whole
situation have been taken so lightly. It
has shown us that anyone can walk
into our schools and do whatever they
wish and suffer no consequences at
all. The fact that this happened is bad
enough, the fact that nothing is being
done about it is worse.
