year which saw him sell a majority of
his equipment.
“ Basically we were trying to up
date the equipment," he explained.
The team went out in search of
newer equipment and ended up run
ning in both the NASCAR and all-pro
circuits.
“I sold most everything (car, en
gines) at the end of 1984,” he remem
bered. "And because of that we didn’t
get started until June of 1985. By that
time it was too late to pursue much of
anything.
The 1985 and 1986 years were ones
in which Raines was more selective
in his races.
“We just picked out our races,” he
remembered “We weren't chasing
points so it enabled us to be more
selective in what we wanted to do.”
The 1986 season might have been
his best as Raines finished in the top
10 every time we started a race.
“It was a great year,” he
remembered.
Then came the debacle of 1987.
“It had to be the worst year we'd

ever had," he said.
“We’d gone to Daytona with the
compact series,” he remembered "A
spark plug wire fell off and they (pit
crew) failed to find it until the race
was over. When you lose one cylinder
and you’ve only got four (cylinders) to
begin with it’s kind of tough.”
The next week after Daytona
Raines was running in fourth place in
Summerville, S.C., when an accident
occurred.
“I got tapped in the rear toward the
end of the race,” he recalled. “We
were in fourth place but finished
13th. The following week Raines was
running second when a slower car cut
him off.
“We always seemed to be in the
right place at the wrong time,” he
said.
The May of that year saw Raines
prepare for a race at Talledaga. Ala.
“We were ready for a man to
deliever an engi ne but they had prob
lems and didn’t deliver it,” said
Raines. “We installed an engine in

time was when I couldn’t play.”
This past spring was more to his
liking under new head coach Ron
Jumey who as an assistant had re
cruited Bennett out of high school.
“I relate to him (Jumey) a lot bet
ter,” said Bennett. “Because he re
cruited me I had gotten to know him a
lot better.”
Bennett received a break when Ke
vin Ayers, last year’s starter at quar
terback, was moved to defensive
back.
“That gave me a great chance to
move up the (quarterback) line,” said
Bennett
Bennett is currently No. 2 behind
Mike Gwynn, last year’s back-up
quarterback. There are four quarter
backs with a chance at earning the
starting nod this fall.
John Tomlinso, a wishbone quar
terback from Alabama, is currently
ranked third. Chris Team, a transfer
from Valdosta State, is listed as the
fourth-team quarterback.
“Nobody has been guaranteed the
starting role," said Bennett. “Coach
Jumey has made sure we ail under

time for practice and qualifying.”
A damaged piston kept him from
qualifying that year.
Last year was an extension of bad
luck.
“Last year was a draw of some bad
cards,” Raines remembered. “We
didn’t do anything any different sta
tegy-wise than we had in ’B7. “Last
year was not an exceptional year but
we ran second three times.”
The downfall came when he
crashed both cars within a seven-day
period.
“Even so we came back and had a
pretty good year,” he remembered.
The first of May saw Raines run
ning second or third until the 275th
lap at Birmingham, Ala. A faulty tire
caused him to lose two laps.
Then came Sunday’s race at Dayto
na. After33o laps he was running fifth
when an accident slowed things. This
time he fought his way back and fin
ished fifth.
“Until the accident I really felt we
had a chance to win,” said Raines. “It
felt good to be back in that position.”
