MY ANSWER
By Billy Graham
Sp«cl»l to Th« Community N»wt
DEAR DR. GRAHAM: What do you
think of the meditation techniques
that are popular these days - tran
scendental meditation, for example?
I have a friend who says that it is the
best way to achieve inner peace and
serenity, because you empty your
mind of everything and all that is left
is peace. Do you think this is true? -
C.H.
DEAR C.H.: Such techniques
(most of which can be traced back to
ideas from various oriental reli
gions) may give an illusion of peace
to some people. But ultimately it is
only an illusion (or even a deception)

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 1990-
because these techniques don’t real
ly help a person deal with their prob
lems They only mask or hide those
problems, instead of coping with the
real issues.
Why do we not have inner peace 9
The real reason, according to the Bi
ble, is that we are separated from
God, our Creator. As long as we re
main separated from Him, we will
never know lasting peace. Our great
est need is to be reconciled to God -
and until we are, any “peace” we
achieve is only temporary. Medita
tion techniques alone cannot bring
us to God, because they cannot erase
the stain of sin which separates us
from God.
How can this separation from God

be ended? The key is to realize that
God loves us, and He has done every
thing possible to bridge the gap be
tween us and Himself. How did He
do this? By sending His own Son. Je
sus Christ, into the world to take
away our sins and bring peace be
tween us and God. “For Christ died
for sins once for all, the righteous for
the unrighteous, to bring you to God”
(1 Peter 3:18).
Have you ever opened your heart
to Jesus Christ and experienced the
peace He promises? If not, by faith
turn to Him today - and encourage
your friend to do so also. “Through
faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ro
mans 5:1).
The program varies from musical
and singing presentations to speakers
who talk about single adult issues and
interesting community, cultural and
practical topics. Free refreshments
and babysitting are available.
Following the meeting everyone
gathers at a local restaurant for more
fun and fellowship. You do not have to
be a member of any church to
participate.
